How many does the Vines Center really seat?

I thought when the Vines Center was orginally constructed that Dr. Falwell wanted an arena bigger than both Tech and UVa (at the time). Originally the number that was mentioned was 10,000 or 9,000. Now, the paper mentioned (I think) that the Vines Center seats 8,500 and the LU website says it seats:
Capacity: 8,500 for basketball and 10,000 for special events
http://www.libertyflames.com/index.cfm?PID=13647
However, others have said with the broken chairs it realistically only seats something like 7,500. Do we really have a thousand broken chairs in there? When I picked up my season tickets, they had a "B" written on all the seats that were broken, and there were quite a few of them. Does anyone know if those broken seats will be placed this year and what the realistic seating capacity is at present (minus the broken chairs)?

I don't know if anybody truely knows. I think it was 9000 regular, and 10k with floor seating, but they removed those bleachers over by the tunnel and put up storage closets/tacobell signs. So maybe that's why it's 8500 now.

So, if we've been averaging 14k at football games, is it plausible that the Vines could be packed almost completely with students? I've seen it full for basketball a few times since I've been here, but that was always at tournament time. I can't really imagine a regular season game with mostly students in attendance.

Can you have thundersticks at basketball games? 8)

I doubt the Vines is packed on a regular basis. Maybe when Winthrop, Radford, VMI, and High Point play, but other than that I highly doubt a packed student side. You can guarantee the locals aren't coming out until McKay provides us with a winning team on the court, which may take until next year for that to happen.

maybe if we had a basketball game only once a week and it was on a saturday. That would be crazy to have a full Vines for regular season games. We really would very rarely lose at home if that happened. There's no overflow like the hill in williams stadium. You'd have to hand out tickets to the students.

Oh, I didn't mean this year. I just meant in the relative short-term. 2-4 years.

I agree with you, though, LUconn. I think we'd very rarely lose if we could fill 'er up. I wish the all of the students could grasp the symbiosis of attendance and winning. They want wins and attendance definitely helps that.

I'm pretty confident that with the conclusion of FB season- JB will turn his attention to hoops, and it seems to me that if we can arrange a jumbo-tron, luxury boxes and flamethrowers, he can certainly arrange to have SEATS replaced.

My guess is when the full might of the AD's office focuses on winter sports- we'll see some pretty special things in Vines.

I just wish all of our students could spell & define symbiosis.

Anyone here know what it means? Is it anything like the past tense of osmosis? I am lost here. :D

symbiosis speaks of the dependent relationship between two organisms (if you have seen Spiderman 3 that black suit that he had for part of the film was actually a symbiote).

Wait. Did I get it wrong?

If not, the irony is that while I somehow managed to spit out symbiosis in a sentence, I made a grammatical flub at the beginning of the sentence when I typed "the" instead of "that". My brain obviously works in spurts.
