A low graduation rate does not necessarily correlate directly to the quality of the education. So, what's your point?

the last 2 or 3 years duke has had a 50-60% graduation rate in basketball. a little before that 70-80%, and before that even higher. among big-name schools (athletically and academically) , duke is typically known for it's graduation rate.

every school's rate is all over the place, but overall duke certainly does not have "one of the lowest graduation rates."

the graduation rate does not include players that jump early to the NBA......

last 2-3 years it been in between 50-60%.....

They are known for that because Dickie V says it ever game and he is wrong.....they have one of the lowest graduation rates.....

if you look at the end of the bench, those white kids who never play, you will find their graduates.....

Why do you care if they want to talk about it? How is it stupid for them to have a conversation about something they want to talk about?

Listen, I never went to Duke, but I grew up about 20 miles down the road from there. In that area there are three schools that are as well supported as any professional sports franchise I have ever seen. People in North Carolina pick one of the three and root for them, because they compete on the national stage so regularly. (Well, maybe not NCSU, but their fans like to dream.) The three schools are central to the economy and culture of the area. Life revolves around UNC, NCSU and Duke in the Triangle area. There's no getting around it. If you don't understand it, that's fine, but for people from the area it's no more stupid about arguing over how the Yankees do business.

I understand that being your team. But graduation rate doesn't mean anything but to someone who acutally graduated from that school. It's certainly nothing to brag over or defend.

Oh, and for what it's worth, Duke's basketball graduation rate for 2005 (the latest year available) was 58%. That's not good, but it's far from the lowest. Kentucky only graduates 8% of their basketball players, and there are many schools down there in the basement with them.However, when it comes to student athletes overall, Duke was at the top with a 97% graduation success rate.

For jmdickens: By comparison, UNC was at 67% for basketball and 83% for all athletes.

And to make this conversation less "stupid" for kazport: Liberty was at 58% for basketball and 79% for all athletes.

I think (and this is just a guess) the logic is that the overall basketball program must be better if more players are actually graduating from the school they're playing for. I disagree, but as I mentioned in another thread, I do love stirring things up with the Carolina fans.

Edit: I should also say that Duke isn't really my team anymore. Since I left home I generally like to see the ACC on the whole do well, but I pull for the Flames. I gave Duke up when they did so well for so long. They didn't need another "proximity fan", as I like to call them.

I was a four point my senior year. 2 in the fall and 2 in the spring. I always found studying to be overrated.

graduation rate is ridiculous to argue, but it did tick me off a little bit that someone would say something (negative towards my team) without providing any facts.

whether i'm a duke fan, heel fan or whatever, it is a fact that the duke basketball team has been known for graduating a good % of their players... not to say that others schools don't.

and my numbers in the previous post DID include players that went pro. that was the majority. you thought 30, 40, 50% of guys that played for and went to school at DUKE dropped out, flunked out, quit or something?!

i argue my opinion. what is their to argue with facts?

my point is that you said duke has a low graduation rate, even one of the lowest. you are wrong about that. i admitted that the last 2 to 3 years has been in the 50-60% range (which includes 2005). your statement was general, not specific. had you said, "duke had a lower graduation rate in 2005," then i would have agreed with you... a surprising first.

You can't say they "had" a low graduation rate unless you specify what years, because before Elton Brand, they had an insanely high graduation rate.
