Man, I didn't think we had the perception of being that bad.

Noone over 6'5" and the only inside oriented player is AZ Reid. Alex deserves to be on this team based on his productivity last year, even if you don't consider position (which they obviously don't).

I don't think there is anyone you can take off the list to put Ace on there though. Jack Leasure would be the only one to me and he is a 1st team pre season virtually every year. He was POY his soph year. I could see Jenkins maybe but def not AZ, Reggie or Gaynor. Those 3 are a 1st team lock. It's not about Pre-season accolades though. The important awards are given out in March.

Alex had a higher scoring average than either Jenkins or Leisure, while shooting a much higher percentage, and he was second only to Reid in rebounding. Neither of the aforementioned players had the kind of assist numbers to offset Ace's rebounding and shooting percentage. In short, I think Alex was a more productive player. I agree that Williams and Reid are no-brainers and Gaynor deserves the pre-season nod (although TeeJay may have something to say about the ones that count.

No. Ian Guerin posted them on his blog for CSTV.

With Reid returning, the Big South's sports information directors and selected media found it enough to select High Point as the favorite to win the league this season.
Winthrop was second, followed by VMI, Coastal Carolina, UNC-Asheville, Liberty, Charleston Southern and Radford.
The voting panel also gave preseason player of the year honors to Reid.
Joining him on the first team is VMI guard Reggie Wiliams, Coastal guard Jack Leasure, and Winthrop guards Chris Gaynor and Michael Jenkins.

Ian had some good posts. I found it interesting that Peele voted HP first and that wound up being the vote that put them as the preseason favorite.

Whatever, we all know we will finish higher than that.

beyond that- the reg conf season is really a tuneup for the conf tourney anyway.
Ask VMI last season how much they cared about conf standings after all when they were a shot or 2 from going to the Dance.

It will be interesting to watch to future unfold. There are those who beat their drum that we are moving in a positive direction but obviously the media, sids and coaches don't see it yet. Let's hope it is better than the over hyped football season.

I don't think any of that is obvious. What you see is the rest of the league looking and seeing both Larry & Brew gone. Its not unreasonable for outsiders to downgrade our chances. But then again, I have a hard time seeing us downgraded THAT far even in our worst case scenarios.

Considering that moving in a new direction with an athletic program can sometimes take two to three years, it would be hard to blame them since our new coach has only been here for four and a half months.

If you want to talk smack about football, take it to the football forum and start a new thread. The guys over there would love to discuss your opinion on hype this year, I'm sure. In fact, I'll start the thread for you. All you'll have to do is read it and reply. Easy!

There is no better way to come into a season than the sleeper...they dont hand out any hardware at the beginning for pre season picks...so let's just get all these honors when it counts

Obviously, the media thinks the landscape is changing. I think the Flames will be armed with weed killer, though.

Agreed. Wait and see.
