Well, if all 3 of our current verbals sign along Dereck O. , that accounts for all our scholarships, and leaves us woefully thin in the post. I have to believe there will be some movement somewhere.

Pair-of-sox looking like Karnac in this thread. Obviously Coach liked what he saw. Seems like it will be good to have this guy around to suppliment all the young talent.

“Sammy is the only JC player we recruited, because we wanted to build our program with youth. But we could not pass up on his maturity, leadership ability and the uniqueness in regards to his attributes. We expect him to make an immediate contribution.”

Along with a couple of years of Juco experience, it looks like Sammy can provide some much needed bulk/muscle. Also, 53% from 3 is a nice number, even if he didn't shoot many.

He will give us some experience which will be much needed. I like how McKay said this was the only Juco they even looked at. He must be pretty good.

I think Sammy can be a real key for us next year, and he seems to naturally be overlooked by the incoming freshman. If he can come in and give us solid defense and rebounding in the post then that will help out immensely. However, at 6'4" how realistic is it that he can play the 4 effectively?

I don't think he would defend the opponent's center, but could be an option posting up offensively. David Dees, who was about the same height and not as wide, had the second best (after Aluma) post-up game I have seen in over 30 years of following LU bball. AZ Reid could post up on anyone. A lot more than height goes into making an inside scoring threat.

mark jackson was a very effective post up threat as a PG. size is one of the least important factors for being an effective low post threat. does size matter? sure, but it's overrated. i'll take a a smaller guy who knows what he's doing down low every day of the week.

Mark Jackson was never a threat in the post, his game was just a byproduct of the NBA's simpleton rules against any defense other than strict man to man defense. Jackson would post up the smaller gaurds and take his time doing it while the bigger defenders simply had to stand by and watch.

If you wanna talk about smaller more powerful PF's, then Charles Barkley would have to head that list. He was listed as 6-6, but some said he was actually only 6-4. Sammy Jackson is a wide body like Barkley.

For starters, Sammy Jackson has 2 to 3 inches on Dees.

Secondly, I have to disagree with your accessment of Dees as the second best post-up. Coleman, Dixon, even Martin immediately come to mind.

Robin--I mean Dees--is listed at 6'4".

I remember Dees being around 6-3 at the most. Sammy Jackson is listed at the top of this thread as 6-5. He's listed at 6-5 on the LU website as well.

Gabe Martin was 6-5, and a very efficient all-around player for LU at the 4.

My evaluation of Dee's skills in the post is obviously subjective and opinions will vary. What is NOT an opinion is that both Dees and Jackson are in the 6'4-6'5 range. Numbers aren't going to tell the story here, since Dees played the 2 or 3 and spent most of his time on the perimeter. IMHO his advantage in posting up the players guarding him was underutilized. He had the best assortment of post moves and shots I have seen in a player at LU, and was pretty doggone powerful as well. I would compare his physical tools and skill set to AZ Reid, but unlike Reid he wanted to be a perimeter player, because he saw that as his path to the pros.

Aluma was the best based on sheer size as well as skill. Martin was at his best facing his opponent and driving to the hoop as opposed to playing back to the basket. Coleman and Dixon were serviceable big men who had a size and strength advantage against many of their opponents during that era, but both were better rebounders IMHO than offensive players.
