Another Texan becomes a Flame! But there does appear to be the possibility that he may choose football if he gets a bigtime offer as WR so he'll likely wait til the spring signing period as a result.

Plano East forward/center Kevin Smith (6-6) said he has orally committed to Liberty.
Smith averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for Plano East last season. Smith will join PESH graduate, Anthony Smith (no relation), who will be a junior at Liberty.

Rivals.com wrote:"Yesterday, I committed to Liberty," Smith said. "It seemed like a good place for me to go. I just like the overall program, the players, and the coaches. The coaches came to all of my games this summer and said that I was number one on their list."
Smith, who has yet to visit the Liberty campus, was able to make his decision thanks partially to the advice of another PESH alum currently there in Lynchburg, Virginia. "Anthony Smith goes there and he's got a chance to go pro," Smith said. "He told me some really good things about Liberty, as did some other people."

Hopefully, he grows 6 inches over the Summer.

We need some bigs!

has smitty improved that much over the summer that people are telling him he could go pro?

He had the skills to go pro right now ... just not the NBA. But hopefully he can improve enough that even that is not out of reach.

I think RMK said that nearly from day one, after he got a good look at him.
he's really been high on ASmith.

This kid is from the Dallas area so I haven't seen him. But I'm checking with my contacts up there to get the low down on this kid.

If we were telling him he was number 1 on our list, he must be good.

PA's right -- RMK has been telling ASmith he's a pro, now. He probably won't go NBA but I think it's safe that he's got a career ahead of him somewhere.

I know a scout whos see him play and they said hes a good player. I wonder why RM never recruited some of these bigger guards at UNM? I think you got a good player.

He plays receiver for the school you may remember for that incredible comeback a decade or so ago when the local announcers went nuts and talked about getting sick on the air. Football is ENORMOUS in Plano.
Hey, perhaps he winds up being a two-sport star for us.

It will be interesting to see if our two verbals, Lewis and Smith, actually end up getting signed. If they do and Derek Oestreicher tranfers in, then we'd be left will only one scholarship left to give for next season, unless of course, we have a few developments. More than likely, they'll be some developments down the road.

Attrition is inevitable at every program.
And Kevin admits this is a "soft verbal". But he sure would be a nice addition.

As of this weekend he is now listed by Rivals as a verbal commit to Louisiana Tech.

Since he's not a shooting guard, we probably don't need him anyway.

I figured the odds of landing him were slim. If he does end up going to Louisiana Tech, then good luck to him.

He had 9 TD catches for a good high school team so I suspect he's going to La Tech on a football ride.

Smalls, Smith close to decision
BY Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
(Created: Wednesday, January 30, 2008)
With National Signing Day less than a week away, Feb. 6 to be exact, two Plano East football players are closing in on making their decisions.
East senior wide receiver Kevin Smith, currently playing post for the district-leading basketball team, has narrowed his choices to Louisiana Tech and Wake Forest according to East head football coach and cluster athletic coordinator Johnny Ringo.
Smith, who is an inside presence for the surging Panthers basketball team, was originally viewed as a hoops prospect. In the fall, the 6-foot-5 East senior orally committed to Liberty and said, “It is the best decision for me right now.”
But after a senior season on the gridiron in which he led East with 49 catches, 713 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, Smith caught the eye of numerous football scouts. Smith also saw more and more time at defensive end as the 2007 season progressed.
Ringo said Smith will be taking a visit to Wake Forest this weekend.

He has signed to play football at Wake. I suppose we could take him off our commit's page
