You all remeber CJ Cowgill. After transferring from LU, he played NAIA ball in Hawaii. He was a terrific threepoint shooter. One of the best we've ever had. He ended up playing European professional ball for a while. After that it seems he took a job at his HS alma mater as the tennis coach, before stepping down last year amidst controversy.

It's been slow on the website lately so I thought I'd try to dig up some juicy news.

Anyway, here's the link to the article. http://www.theindependent.com/stories/0 ... ll12.shtml

Oh, and you may have to register with the newspaper to read it.

I believe CJ may have posted on the Firehouse a year or so ago a couple of times.

For the record, whatever went down with that tennis team he did the smart thing by taking the approach of coming forward to the fishwrap.

Cowgill discusses resignation
Crusader graduate wants to end speculation as to why he stepped down

Citing a desire to cease speculation about his resignation as the Grand Island Central Catholic girls tennis coach, CJ Cowgill has elected to speak publicly about the matter.
Cowgill, who stepped down Monday with two weeks remaining in the season, originally said only that he made the decision for "personal reasons." However, since his resignation became public, Cowgill said he felt compelled to clear up any misconceptions.

"Basically, the most important thing is I want to get it out there that I didn't do anything against the law," Cowgill said. "It honestly was a personal decision for me to resign. I wasn't fired and I wasn't forced out.

"The main thing I want people to know is that I didn't do anything sexually inappropriate or anything like that."

Cowgill said "philosophical differences" were the reason for his resignation.

"I would say that I probably wasn't that great of a fit for the job to begin with," Cowgill said. "Just as far as my previous experiences, the people I've played with and the people I've played for, I probably was demanding too much of them and was too hard on them.

"It just didn't work. I just couldn't be myself out there and that's why I stepped down."

Central Catholic superintendent Jerry Seitz had no comment.

Cowgill, who played college basketball at both the NCAA Division I and NAIA levels, said he probably didn't take the correct approach to coaching a high school girls tennis team.

"I wouldn't say that I said anything offensive, I would just say that I probably wasn't positive enough," Cowgill said. "That's a lesson and I've definitely learned something from this experience.

"I just went into it with the idea that I didn't care if I was coaching girls tennis or I was coaching a football team, I was going to do it exactly the same. I failed in that regard. You can't do that."

Cowgill said another reason for the timing of his resignation was that it became apparent to him that the Crusader girls tennis team needed a change. Assistants Pat Wagoner and Mary Brand will coach GICC for the remainder of the season.

"I can't not be me," Cowgill said. "Going into the end of the season and state, I felt they needed something more positive.

"I liked all the girls I worked with and I'd do anything for them, but it probably wasn't a good fit between my personality and what (Central Catholic) was looking for."

Cowgill said he apologizes to anyone he may have hurt.

"That wasn't my intention," Cowgill said. "I only wanted to raise the level of tennis and make the girls the best players they could be."

That is my purpose in life. To sardonically state the things no one else will LOL. After all, I think the ill feelings can be chalked up to jealousy!

CJ was a cool dude and a decent teammate, I think Mel and his staff did him kind of dirty though. I still show people his shot and the only way I can prove it to them is if I show them actual game footage. I have the shot down to a tee. So CJ if you ever return to read this I hope things are going well for you and if not hold your head.
