Coach D is back in a coaching setting this summer. However, it's not at the college level. He's coaching his daughter's U16 AAU basketball team. They're down in Georgia playing right now.

Cedarville is an excellent school. My grandfather was a longtime board member and I have an uncle who heads the biology department.
Go Jackets.

i heard that his daddy told him he wasn't good enough to even be a walk-on for liberty.

well i heard that from a coach that was recruiting him, and i tend to believe this coach wouldn't make up something like that.

maybe he didn't want to have to deal with all the father & son crap that tubby smith had to go through with his son saul at kentucky, even if the kid was good enough.

I'm thinking it was more of finding a right fit...a school with similar values as Liberty, along with a good MBB program...but one where he could come in and play immediately. There is something to be said for that.

true, and it looks like cedarville is a heck of an naia team. and maybe he didnt want to be known as randy dunton's son and playing second fiddle to his dad his 4 or 5 years in college, of course during the recruiting time no one knew RD was going to get fired either though. it would be interesting to know if he actually could come in and play right away. it's not often you see a team that did as good as them have a freshman get playing time right off the bat.

Is RD's new summer job paid or volunteer?

AAU coaching jobs rarely ever pay, especially at 16U girls.

Matt is definitely good enough to walk on at Liberty. VMI was legitimately looking at him. I know Duggar thought he would be a good fit. Matt will start at Cedarville and he is the 1st PG to get a full ride there ever from what I understand. They have a national championship calibre team but they were missing a heady point guard to run the show and that is why they really got him and were willing to spend a little more money than normal. They usually save the full rides for the 6-6 and above players. The thing I like about Matt is he keeps improving every time he gets on the court. Also he knows the game very, very well and is a decent athlete too. He would have loved to play at Liberty for his dad but I don't know if he thought about playing at Liberty with RMK. I am not sure about RD telling him not to play here though. I think he let Matt make his own decision and probably guided him a little to that Full ride as opposed to walking on here. I think he made an excellent choice. I really wanted to see him in a Liberty Uniform though. That would have been fun for me personally as I have known him virtually his entire life.

Maybe it was the other way around

This whole thread is worthless.
The guys gone. Let's show a little class.
I know for a fact that Coach D wanted Matt to play at Liberty and thought he was good enough. Matt is going to be a good player at the college level. He is a very smart player, plays under control, a great leader on the floor, and his fundamentals are excellent.

Obviously RD wanted Matt to play a t LU when he was the coach. In addition to getting to coach his kid, it would have given him another scholarship calibre player and potential future starting PG w/o using a schollie. With dad between gigs, I doubt Matt even considered any options which did not include a full ride.

I was just letting everyone know what a former coach was doing these days. Everyone else brought up Matt.

SuperJon - I wasn't getting on you. You started with good intentions, it turned on the second post - when it said good to see Coach land on his feet - I felt a little sarcasm in that post:)

Really? Seems to be pretty classy to me. Everyone has nothing but good things to say about Matt, which is what almost all of the thread has been about. That's got to be worth something. At least two cartwheels.
