Alright guys I've been sitting on this one for a while....Coach Martin has been hired as the Head Basketball Coach at The Masters College....as many of you know Coach Martin has been with RD since day one and has been prepared for years to take over his own program...RD is thrilled for Martin's opportunity and they are leaving each other in as good of terms as you can leave on...Coach Martin is going to help out in EVERY way he can until RD is able to find the right man for the job.....

Coach Martin has been ready for this opportunity for many years and a lot of it is b/c of what LU has brought him (Knowledge, Connections, friendships...etc), and he didn't leave b/c of difference of opinion's or anything like that....in fact RD is the one that hooked him up with these connections that led to him getting hired....if you bring in good Assistant Coach's (and not able to pay them like other schools) then you will lose them to better opportunities....I will start to worry when we have coach's leaving to be the Assistant Coach at Lynchburg College, until then I thank these guys for making sacrifices to better our program

I look at it as a positive....name any other program that has produced 3 head coach's....RD wont have any problems at all finding someone, b/c that coach will look at the track record and say "If I come to LU then I better myself and know my chance's are good to get a Head Coaching job somewhere"

Congrats to Coach Martin. Quite a move. I wonder if Coach D has thought about getting a Euro assistant and establising a pipeline like the women have done???

Good for Coach Martin. I know he was trying to get out last year and was frustrated b/c he couldn't. The Master's has a history of being good although I don't know what they have done recently. Good luck to him!!! He is "leaving for a better place"

that is the first piece of useful info I've seen from you..... but in all honesty that's a great idea, you wont find to many more fundamentally sound ball players....heck where was the last assistant coach CG got....Germany I believe.....and I think we all agree he's got a pretty good system going on over there

I for one am sorry to see Chuck go. I know he is a very capable coach and is a good motivator and can relate to his players well so I expect him to do some big things out there. Good Luck Chuck and congratulations!!!

are we gonna start a new "the great Assistant MBB coach-search" thread now? so we can properly obsess, worry, and fight over the potential candidates for the next few weeks/months?

The associate head coach at Liberty is a good job (unless they promote Zach or Lex to that position) that will attract some strong candidates. Even if they don't package it as the top assistant, it will still attract some good people. They have some options. I wouldn't mind seeing Matt Hildebrand come in and be involved in this coaching staff. He is an outstanding example off the court and of course it is well documented how good of a player he was. I hear Nwoso wants to get into coaching. Julius would be a good link to Nigeria. Kenneth Annebonam still works camps over there in Nigeria and he was telling me that they have a ton of players they are trying to get to America to play ball. They are starting a group something like AAU ball for Nigerians where coaches can come and evaluate talent. I know we are gonna bring in someone of quality. My vote is for Hildo.

Other guys I would like to see get a shot at coming back to Liberty are Jason Allison at VMI. He is young, can evaluate talent well, has a great coaches mind (so we used to tell him when he played for us at Liberty  ) and he has a passion for not just college hoops but for Liberty. I think he could bring some positives in terms of player relations and coping as a student athlete at Liberty...He and I talk all the time and we were at the VHSL state semi's the other night in Richmond and had a great time....Also John Jones who is the head coach at Nyack college in NY. Jones is a Liberty grad that worked on our staff as a grad assistant back in the day. He would be a good asset as well. I am not sure if Hildo would even consider the move to college hooops. He is out at Rustburg with Former Flames player and coach Paul Nazigian as his AD. Naz and I grew up together as rivals but became good friends while we were teammates at Liberty (he also coached with RD, Meyer and me).

Great thing for Coach Martin. A great guy who is well deserving and extremely capable. Nice to see the "old Edsel" in his latest post, trying to put as much negative spin on the move as possible.

What negative spin? He was trying to leave last year and all the jobs fell through. His is going to a better place as well. now put a fork in it before I slap a "T" on ya!! :D

I don't know nearly enough about the departure of JM to have an opinion here, so I couldn't even begin to take sides. But, I do wonder if a M. Hildo or P. Nazigian would know enough. I think I've read enough on this site to know that JM left on no good terms, and RD stayed. So my question, and it is solely a curious one, is if either of those two mentioned near the job would have objections with working with RD. In other words, would they side with JM in the debate?

Knowing Hildo only some, I think he would make a good candidate as far as I can tell...

I agree with grm. You got to be kidding. Masters over Liberty? I love Coach Martin and hate to see him leaving. This is his chance to be a head coach, but if both jobs were open - which one would he choose - Liberty or Masters? It's not even an argument.

Congrats Coach Martin!! Good Luck!!

Lynchburg! Hands down.

Crime rate, cost of living, up-in-comming University (Masters isn't going anywhere). And the Smog.... He's not going to USC or UCLA... this is Master's

Yeah - but coaches don't look at it that way. It's about the program and and how long it will take them to get to that next step. LA is nice, I agree, but I'm happy here in Lynchburg:)

Agreed, I mean it could be Podunk USA and if it's a good program they'll get good coach's, the area is just a bonus

Men’s Basketball Associate Head Coach Chuck Martin Takes Head Coaching Position At Master’s College
March 24, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty University men’s basketball associate head coach Chuck Martin has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at the Master’s College, a NAIA school in Santa Clarita, Calif.

“I certainly am humbled and honored that Dr. MacArthur and Mr. Berry would choose me out of many outstanding coaches to be the next head basketball coach at The Master's College,” stated Martin. “To be able to coach college basketball at a Christian college and in the highly competitive GSAC conference is a dream come true.”

“I will certainly miss the people and the purpose of Liberty University,” added Martin. “It has truly been a wonderful experience. To be a small part of the vision of Dr. Falwell and to spend five years with Coach Dunton living and learning the Division I experience is truly sometimes hard to fathom. I have been blessed beyond measure."

Martin just recently completed his fifth overall year with the Flames’ basketball program and his first season as the program’s associate head coach.

Martin was a member of the coaching staff during the 1997-98 season, while he rejoined the staff for the 2002-03 season where he quickly helped revitalize the program as Liberty posted the fifth-best turnaround amongst NCAA programs that season and finished second in the Big South Conference. Martin helped complete the turnaround in 2004 as the Flames claimed the program’s second-ever Big South Conference title and made the school’s second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

“The Master’s College has given a tremendous opportunity to Chuck Martin,” commented Liberty University head men’s basketball coach Randy Dunton. “I am thankful for Chuck’s valuable contribution to the Liberty University Men’s Basketball program. This promotion will be a vehicle of growth and outreach for both programs.”

Prior to his days at Liberty, Martin posted a 283-89 career record in 14 seasons as a head coach at various high schools in Alaska, leading to two state championships, eight regional championships and 12 trips to the Alaska State tournament, while posting six undefeated seasons in league action.

I don't like to pick up "T's" and have learned that it if you don't yell, don't cuss, and just express your opinion, the ref has no justification for giving you a "T." Having said that, why is it necessary to seek "a commie behind a tree" when an assistant
gets an opportunity to be a head coach and accepts it? Most assistants have it in their game plan to be a head coach whenever possible. Now, here we are, gossips looking for a new tidbit, trying to find out the story behind the story, when the real story is right up front. A nice guy and great coach got an opportunity that most will never have - the chance to lead a college program.

God bless Coach Martin, and I wish you great success. I'll come to the game at Biola (two blocks away from my house)
and cheer you on!

If you want to give me a "T" for that, you don't belong on the court.

Lovingly,

Jerry Mitchell
