Here's a story running in the Albuquerque fishwrap Wednesday. Clearly Coach McKay is handling this situation with a great deal of class.
McKay admits making mistakes as Lobo
Looks forward to less limelight as Liberty coach

Two months after his firing from his post as the University of New Mexico's men's basketball coach, Ritchie McKay reluctantly acknowledges he made some missteps during his time as a Lobo.

"I make mistakes like everyone else, but now I have a renewed passion for change," he said during a recent phone interview with The Tribune.

That change comes in the form of a new job for McKay, who said he's looking forward to his future as the head coach at Liberty University, not dwelling on his past at UNM.

This is an example of why I think it is important to allow a former coach (current example Dunton) to gracefully move on to their next gig. Obviously, comments like those listed would hurt the coach and his family if they read them. Being a part of the Liberty family, we need to be careful of the words that we use. We need to be different.

That being said, I am glad that we have Coach McKay. Some of the Lobo fan base would never have appreciated him because of his stand as a Christian. He is in the right place.

We've had enough of you UNM guys on here to not make generalizations about Lobo fans.

I really like what I've read about Coach McKay. I believe he's someone the student body and alumni can root for even if the team takes some lumps during the transition years. Kudos to the AD.

Wasn't happy with the article. I really wish the New Mexico media would just leave Coach Mckay alone. He is a great guy that did what was asked of him... Was he in over his head here? Maybe so... People here have some unrealistic expectations here in Albuquerque at times.

As far as his religious beliefs, I can't understand why people flipped out on his beliefs. While I don't care for the mix of religion and sports (mostly because I think most people use it as a prop. Just my opinion) I believe Coach Mckay is strong in his beliefs and was always up front and honest with his beliefs. That offended for whatever reason some people here.

I hope Coach does well there!

I like how McKay takes responsibility and owns up to his mistakes (not a slam on anyone else, so don't go there) and is such a fresh concept for a lot of coaches.

He's going to do well here, IMO.
