Brew probably feels the same way (judging by his "McKay could've been my best coach ever" statement), but he has a family he has to take care of as a dad.

I'm not saying I don't agree that taking care of his family should be #1 priority but I've never understood this arguement. If he's only a year away from a degree, doesn't that help his family for the long run than playing one extra season overseas?

Although, I'll miss Brew as much as anyone, I for one, often wondered where he fit in with regard to McKay's style of play.

Last season, he transferred here for an opportunity to play the 1, and that project failed miserably. So, where would he play this season? He'd most likely be a 2-gaurd, however, Anderson and Jenkins will both bring more to the table than Brew with respect to overall perimeter play. Anderson is a fundamentally-sound leader and a scorer with all the intagibles, and based on last season, Jenkins appears to have untapped talent and potential. Therefore, I think we'll be fine next season.


Brew's skills and body-type, especially within McKay's system and within our conference, would be best served at the 4. However, one has to wonder if a player who tranferred to a smaller school in order to play the 1 would be willing to find a home at the 4. Anderson is a leader and a scorer with all the intagibles, and based on last season, Jenkins appears to have unlimited potential

Brewington was virtually unstoppable when shooting close to the basket, but his overall perimeter game is another story. When we consider that his lifetime numbers include 28% from the arc, 63% from the line, and an unimpressive assist to tunrnover ratio, we have to ask ourselves if the program is better served with Anderson and Jenkins getting the majority of playing time at the 2.

I would say with a more polished rendition a la the pistons or heat flame-style, that might be a cool basketball logo.

This guy seems to have class written all over him and recruits will have no excuses about what he and Liberty are all about after looking at his website. Can't wait to see where the program will be in 2 - 3 years.

good post 'Dox. These guys will tell you I'm FAR from a hoops guru- but I've been saying this kinda thing as well. You would know better than I, but I really think we'll be fine. Hoped for more outta Brew-pub this season than we saw last year- but oh well.

must be "sorta-kinda" official - that LIBERTY looks very similar to the sanctioned logo, what with the clipped letters and all

You are nothing if not positive dox. I am too, but I really think it is stretching it a bit to almost imply that Brew leaving is a plus. Yes, his game is far from perfect. He lacks a consistent perimeter shot and turns the ball over too much when he tries to be a playmaker instead of a finisher. The other side of that is that he shoots a ridiculously high percentage, and when playing the 2 or 3 gives you an extrordinary rebounder for those positions, especially on the offensive boards. Add to that the excitement his spectacular plays can generate with the crowd (and his teammates), and I think he would definately have been a big net plus.

Having said that, I think our perimeter shooting will be upgraded and ball handling solidified with the addition of Anderson and Bannister and more minutes for TJ and Tyler. The guys who really need to step up and replace the points Brew and LB gave us finishing on the break or slashing to the hoop in the half court offense will be TJ, and especially Smitty. Smitty needs to become less of a spot-up shooter and use his athleticism more in taking it to the hoop in the half-court offense, not just on the break.


I hope Brew did his research before making this move, because things may have been tight for a family of 4 living on a schollie stipend, but there was a certain security attached to that and the degree it could lead to which he has given up. An agent may promise the world, but the fact is they can't gaurantee anything. Look up Julius Nwosu's "resume" sometime and see all of the places he has had to go trying to make a living playing hoops.

Medic, I think once Brew signs with an agent, it's all over for him as a Flame; honestly, I would have thought McKay would have explained all that to him, and frankly I'm surprised McKay couldn't have convinced Brew to stay. One more year of beans and Romain noodles would have been worth it to make the really big bucks the following year.
