It's official:

Best quote from the article:
“I believe Coach McKay could be one of, if not the best coach I could ever have,” stated Brewington. “But it is time to take care of my family. I am going to get my degree regardless, but for now I am putting it on hold to pursue my dream of playing professional basketball.”

Good luck, Brew. You never have to apologize for taking care of your family. We'll be cheering you on in whatever direction you take.

Amen.

I think it's ridiculous that the sanctimonious fat cats at the NCAA forbid scholarship athletes from working, and then won't let a school assist a married player like Brew enough to provide for his wife and children.

Best wishes to you & your family, Brew: you were the most exciting player to watch since...SCAR.

Now with Brew & Blair gone, what will our starting lineup look like for next year?

1 - TJ
2 - BJ/Kentucky kid
3 - Smitty
4- Rell/Alex
5 - Alex/Russ

Unless RMK brings in an impact player we don't yet know about, IMHO next years starting lineup will be a no-brainer. TJ and BJ in the backcourt with Anthony at small forward and Alex in the middle. I think Rell will get the start at the 4 spot due to his being a senior, but Tyler will probably play more minutes.

Wow, what about Baker, Campbell, and Holland?

1. Bannister / Holland
2. Anderson / Jenkins
3. Smith / Anderson / Baker
4. Baker / Campbell
5. Mclean / Monroe

Porter should see spot duty as a defensive specialist only.

If Winters doesn't return, then we'll need another big body to go along with Ace and Big Russ. Even with the losses of Blair and Brewington, we are still loaded at the three gaurd positions and we have perimeter strenth at the four if we need it.

It looks like McKay has at least one, possibly two or three scholarships left to give. It should be fun.

Oh, I was just putting the people who had a legit chance to start.

You would start Porter over Baker? I don't see Poter in the mix at all with RD gone.

Rell brings a dimension that you need. If Tyler bulks up and gets better down low, he'll start in pretty quick.

I still say TJ won't be here either.....just a hunch

You may be right.

That'd put Holland or BJ over at the 1.

Baker and Campbell can set picks just as well, plus they add punch to our scoring and rebounding. I'd be suprised if Porter is used for anything other than a spot defender.

Rell is a senior and a team captain and leader. I think he will start, but his minutes may be down with Tyler's development. I don't see how we can even project Campbell's role. He didn't even play much at Hargrave. Yes, I know all of their starters have scollies to high-major programs, but it's still hard to say a guy who rode the pine in prep school will play any major role as a D1 freshman.

Where would TJ go? D2? I can't see it, and I really doubt he'll be able to go pro right now. He's in a different situation than Brew, who got a chance to showcase flashes of what he can do this year.

This whole situation sucks...I have no ill feelings towards Brew, he's gotta do what he's gotta do....

but if he was not married and did not have kid he would be living on campus for free, correct??

Why, if he is on scholarship, can he not get his rent and weekly groceries taken care of??? I just don't understand this rule at all

The best luck to Brew....I hope he does get his degree...I really wish he didn't have to go, but such is life

Actually, scholarship athletes that live off campus do receive a stipend for rent and basic expenses. That's completely standard at NCAA schools. Having two kids living with you, however, is not standard and there is a cap on how much stipend aid a student can receive. Maybe the two extra mouths to feed had more to do with it.

To my knowledge, TJ would have no D1 options (regardless of academic standards or lack thereof  ) because he has only 1 year of elegibility left and has already used his redshirt/transfer year. Clearly his best opportunity to show he is a pro prospect would be to stay at LU.

best of luck to brew and his family. his one year here did bring some highlight reel dunks, and his meeting with the deaf child out west was awesome too.

This is typical NCAA ridgitity. There is no reason in the world they could not look at a case like Brew and his family on an individual basis and allow a somewhat higher stipend. Married athletes w/o children usually do OK because the wife can get a job, but with kids she either needs to stay home or pay for child care, which would eat up most of the paycheck. I don't think they are even allowed to accept free child care, as it would be considered an "extra benefit".

Could you imagine if the NCAA allowed student-athletes with children to receive a higher stipend? Talk about opening your proverbial can of worms.

Too bad we couldn't have made Brew an RD (resident director)--those guys get free housing on campus and free meals for the whole family in the Rot. :D
