Greetings from Loboland, Albuquerque, NM. When I saw the news on ESPN I wanted to stop by and let you all know that you got a coach of high character, a great family man, and a true leader. His record here in New Mexico may not have been spectacular, but a lot of the recruits he brought to UNM didn't pan out (Joel Box, great talent, real head case, quit the team twice. Justin Bensen, 4 star caliber PF, quit after Freshman year because of homesickness. Lenny Miles, decided to play football.) That list goes on for days, but the fact is that the players Richie brought in have played hard and gone to class. The problem was that UNM fans really seem to have this deluded belief that we are as good as Kansas, UCLA, Kentucky, or North Carolina. Mind you the lobos have only been to 1 Sweet 16 in our entire basketball history . Coach McKay will be a great addition for your school. [/list]

Thanks for the info GoLobos, and best of luck to the Lobos in the Alford era. I think you are getting a coach who is also a top notch basketball and family man who was the victim of unrealistic expectations. he and Tubby were fortunate to get out on there own terms while Ritchie was not.

Ritchie is a very good man and I think he is going to it in well at Liberty. I think wearing his beliefs on his sleeve hindered him at UNM because Albuquerque as a community leans left and also in recruiting because the big ones that got away or left just didn't share the same philosophy as Coach McKay. At Liberty obviously the spiritual side of life is part of the education process so I firmly believe he will bring in the same quality of recruit there as he did at UNM and thus with that level of talent have incredible success in the league. This is a great fit so congratularions to Ritchie, Liberty and all the Flame fans and good luck.

I found it an interesting development in light of this info you posted, that UNM is bringing in another guy who is vocal about his faith. Something the Iowa message boards seem to have lit him up on (and have been pretty brutal about), similar to how you mentioned the idea that perhaps McKay was hindered by the role of faith in his life in the Lobo court of public opinion. What are your thoughts on how Alford will be initially received by Lobo nation given the role of faith in his life and active participation in FCA?

had made great inroads for UNM in NYC. He had visits(un-officials) from 4 D-I prospects including Devin Ebanks. Pipeline remains open and I beleive Liberty will reap some benefits of the groundwork.
