Good Christian coach, but can we afford him?

I think that he will be a good choice but others on this board don't think so. Even others who know more than I do.

I have been doing some reading on this guy and I really like him...out of the 3 major candidates that I have read about he seems like the guy most "Liberty ready" if that makes sense

He's got the faith without a doubt and he has a solid background....hopefully he can win on the road with us though....

I guess time will tell, but I wouldn't be disappointed with him at all

I did too, and I thought the concensus was that Cooper was the front runner. I'm confused (more than ususl) :?

Is Duckett the 3rd "major candidate"?

Duckett's NIT Florida State team lost last night, right? Maybe he will be coming in for an interview soon. Of course, WVU's Matt Brown is still in the NIT tournament.

McKay certainly appears to be the candidate who has been the most "up front" about his faith. He has the most D1 head coaching experience, of all the candidates, and has a winning record as a head coach. His road record at New Mexico State was indeed dismal, but the other side of that is that he still had a winning record overall, which means his teams have been GREAT at home (which is no surprise since "the pit" is famous for being one of the toughest places in the country for a team to come in and win.)

I don't think we would need to even come close to matching his salary at New Mexico State, which I believe was reported at $400,000. Keep in mind that he was just fired, and I will GUARANTEE you Albequerque is a LOT more expensive place to live than Lynchburg. If he has taken the time to visit with a real estate agent and see that he can get the same house he had there for less than half the price, plus his children will be able to go to LCA free and many other perks, I think he may be interested in what we can offer.

Carter is the candidate from FSU. Duckett is at South Carolina, and has been available to interview for some time.

Money is no object in this search, IMO.

Tim Carter, the all-time winningest head coach in University of Texas-San Antonio basketball history, is in his first season as an assistant coach at Florida State. Carter comes to the Seminoles after winning 160 games and leading the Roadrunners into the NCAA Tournament twice during his 11-year tenure at UTSA.

Carter is nationally recognized as an outstanding evaluator of talent and an outstanding bench coach who has coached in the Big Ten at Northwestern, the Big Eight at Oklahoma State and the Southwestern Conference at Houston.

Carter, 50, was named the Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 when he led UTSA to an 18-11 record and to only the second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. He led the Roadrunners to the NCAA Tournament in both 1999 and 2004 to mark two of the three postseason tournament appearances in school history. Carter led UTSA to the Southland Conference Tournament championship in 1999 and 2004 - the first two conference championships in men's basketball in school history. The Roadrunners had the highest winning percentage in the SLC during 10 of his 11 seasons at UTSA.

In 11 years (1996-2006) as the head coach at UTSA, Carter compiled a 160-152 record. Including one season as the head coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1995) he has a record of 171-168.

In 26 seasons on the collegiate level as a head, assistant and graduate assistant coach, Carter has helped lead five different schools into the postseason including Oklahoma (1983 NCAA), Houston (1987 NCAA), Oklahoma State (1989 and 1990 NIT), Northwestern (1994 NIT) and UTSA (1999 and 2004 NCAA).

During his tenure at UTSA, Carter recruited and coached the top players school history. He coached five of the six Roadrunner players who have earned Southland Conference First-Team honors including Devin Brown -- the only three-time SLC First-Team selection in school history. Brown is still one of only 17 players in SLC history to have earned All-Conference honors three or more times.

Carter began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma from 1982-83 and was an assistant coach at Midwestern State University from 1984-86. He helped lead Houston to the NCAA Tournament in 1987 and then joined Hamilton's staff at Oklahoma State from 1987-90. While at Oklahoma State, Hamilton and Carter teamed to lead the Cowboys to the NIT in 1989 and 1990 - the first time the program had played in the postseason since the 1953 and 1954 seasons.
Carter wouldn't be a bad pick, either.

I took a look at Carter's resume....ummm, any time you have Tubby Smith as one of your references with his phone number, I'm thinking he's a pretty good pick up...not to mention he's got quotes in there from a lot of greats around the country

Does anybody else find it ironic/funny that two of the names that are being talked about involve assistants from Universities that were interviewed when Hank was brought in? FSU and WVU? Maybe we had better look west!

That statement may be a bit extreme, but when you are playing in front of empty seats game in and game out, the coach is expensive at any price. A bump of just 1000/game in attendance would bring in an extra $100,000 or thereabouts if my math is right. Our football situation is a perfect example.

yet that only makes our deficit a little better...it might not be as maroon as it once was...but it's still the color red...which IMO doesnt justify more spending

Just because money won't be an object doesn't mean Barber and Co. won't be smart about it. I don't see a specific being an impediment to who they ultimately decide to name coach.

I'm sure those candidates who are serious about the job have done their homework and know about what coaches are paid in the Big South, and specifically what the top dog GM makes, so they can't expect much more than that.

According to Chris Lang, we spent around $1.4 million on basketball last season which heads the list of the Big South. I can see the possibility of bumping that up to around $1.8, which would put us in the same league -- budget wise -- as VCU.

That's a lot of change to throw at someone, understandably not all going to the coach, but still quite a lot to work with.
