I was watching a special before the NBA All-Star dunk contest this year talking about the greatest dunks of all time, etc.

My personal favorite of the dunk contests through the years is MJ's "Kiss the Rim" dunk he did back in, I think, '89? He heads to the baseline, goes airborne to nearly parallel w/ the ground then brings it home. Just nasty! Plain 'ol nasty. Of course, his double-pump from the foul line was stupid as well. Not just because it was from the foul line, but because of the double-pump.

Anyway, the point of this thread: It got me thinking. What was/is the nastiest dunk I have ever witnessed in person? I have seen A LOT of basketball in person. Whether it be a real college or NBA game or just street ball.

When I got to thinking, it only took about two seconds to determine my winner.

The year was '96, I believe. Liberty was playing someone in the Vines (opponent isn't significant). Liberty was in a semi-transition attack when someone fired up a jumper. Out of nowhere.. I mean, beyond the top of the key, nowhere, comes Aluma. I swear it seemed like he jumped from half court. The shot was missed and Peter goes airborne and THROWS down the nastiest dunk off of the missed shot that I have ever seen on any level.

Anyone there to see this? Scar, I think you were if I'm not mistaken.

Ric Flair? Moving right along ...

I was about to move this thread over to the Non-LU Sports thread until you brought Aluma into the mix. As long as we keep this limited to LU games (whether Flames or opponent dunkers) I like the idea.

But I suspect it won't take long for us to be rehashing a certain ETSU slam. The countodwn is underway for Scar to check in.

Most here know my love of Gabe Martin, but I haven't seen any nastier dunks with such power at LU than I have from Phil Ward. I don't know if the guy was lazy or if he just got slow, but when he got the ball in position, man oh man. He had a sick one handed put back my freshman year. I think it's what kept me coming back that horrible horrible year.

As for the BSC championship game, I think that award goes to Zion White . (I can not believe I can't remember his name. He was the #2 guy for HPU all year long. He jumped from way out over like 2 guys. But they were getting killed. I'll fill in the blank later when I remember his name)[/u]

Well guys, you knew it had to happen sooner or later that I would chime in. I think Keith Ferguson (Small forward from Hildo's days) had one of the nastier putback dunks I have seen but Aluma had a ton from Marcus White that stand out for me as well. I have to go to video to remember some of this stuff but I do know that Darryl Williams was a great game dunker along with Phillip Ward and Gabe Martin. Gabe had a nasty dunk over Phillip Williams of Winthrop off 2 feet and Williams jumped to block it! Blair had one vs Longwood over a guy in transition the first time we played them down there. Chris Lang might remember that one. A skinny kid from Philly had a few dunks (13 in 3 seasons) but the only one that stands out is the ETSU dunk. Seriously guys it has to be on the list and not just cause I did it. It was nasty. Even Brian Woodson said so when he saw it on
tape ( I forced him to watch it one night while playing Madden). I remember the Dunk that Vegas was talking about from Aluma. It was vicious. Julius Nwoso had a dunk his Soph year in Traffic that I will never forget because there was a scramble for the ball under the basket and he picked it up and dunked it while several of his teammates and the Towson players were still holding the ball! It was crazy. No real list here just some random memories but if I had to list the best game dunkers of all time at LU I would say in no order:

Gabe Martin, Phillip Ward, Peter Aluma (from sheer force of the dunks), Julius Nwoso, Bailey Alston (he really only had 1 style but he dunked almost every game it seemed. Rodney Fish Harrison (at 6-5 playing power forward he could get up. He is from the last division II teams), There are others but I don't have that total recall like I used to. Some of you others like RedDog, V88 and Sly that were around back in the day may know some more high flyers. I would include myself on the list but I want to keep it real . Actually LB is a pretty good game dunker for his size. He gets to the rim when you don't think he can.

Who was the guy who used to enter dunk competitions at school in the old Multi-Purpose Center? He wasn't on the team but he always won the competitions. I think he was a high jumper on the track team. He could do most of Dominique's stuff.

Scar, you should seriously look into getting that uploaded on the net. Not only would I like to see it, but it'd be a good resource for future bragging.

LUConn, you know the old saying the older I get the better I was? Well as long as you guys don't actually SEE the dunk it can live on forever as the greatest thing in the world. Gotta leave the public wanting more :D. Seriously man if I had the know how I would get it on here. Maybe El Scorcho or someone can help me out one day if I bring in the tape. Actually next season FTN may have the archives available and they may pull it out and show it during one of our telecasts!

Vegas, the guy you are referring to is James Wilson. He was a high jumper on the track team and could do anything you asked of him as far as dunking. He was from Maryland. You may remember his sister was Michelle. He was not a great player but was a tremendous dunker. He played on my semi-pro teams and my local celebrity teams (WPGC 95-5 Fly Guys) back in the day when I was young and could ball. He was 6-4 but had the wing span of a guy 6-9 which made his dunks look sic. I have one of his contests on tape. It was half time of one of our big games vs Mt St Mary's with 3500 strong in attendance! He and some of the football players put on an absolute show. I didn't see it live of course because I was in the locker room but on tape it was special.

I got to watch gabe for 2.5 years (I arrived in fall of 02) and he had some absolute highlight reel dunks. I mean he would get teh alley oop and the entire student section would just explode. I think I have a video from the 04 Big South Championship game around somewhere.

I was going to bring up Fish but I knew I'd get ripped because it was "only" against Division II competition. Every one of his dunks were ultra-athletic. He was hands down the best dunker of the Late 80s. If he would've stayed at LU he would've been regarded one of our bets overall players. He was from Nashville and was recruited by a number of SEC schools.

No doubt Sly, Fish was a big time athlete and would have been considered one of the best. He left after 1st sememster of his Jr year. He Fred Morgan Steve Farqhahar and Gerald Gee Thomas all came in the year before I got there....LU Conn that is a great pic of Gabe dunking on Tim Almond of VMI! I forgot about that one. Gabe had one against Radford at home too his senior year but it was a breakaway. His best dunks were on people's heads. The pic below is the one I used to tease you about on the other board because he missed the dunk! :D

Carl Williams, the WVU transfer, had some nice dunks during the Hanksinson years. Gabe Martin has been the best dunker I've seen during the last 8 years, but don't forget about Louvon Sneed. Sneed wasn't much of jumper but when he threw it down it looked great.

Vegas I like the pic of Flair. Hard to believe he is still wrestling. ANyway I rememebr that dunk. It was against JMU in 94. I have got a copy of that game, if and when I get a DVD recorder I can make copies(asuming that isn't illegal) if anyone wants an of the games I have.
The 2 I remember were from Jody Chapman. He had a nasty dunk against Campbell in the BSC championship where his knee was in the guys chest. He also had a dunk against UNC, nothing spectactular but we dunked on UNC!

Sorry LUConn I didn't even see the ssshhh...Man how could I forget my boy Jody Chapman. He would dunk on your head in a minute. He can still get up for what he tells me. I still keep up with him and Brett Anthony, Chris Toomer and Matt Hildebrand from that old championship team. I can't think of any specific dunks from Chap but I do remember the Big South Tournament Dunk. Sorry Chap. I am probably forgetting a few more good game dunkers. Keep the memories coming.

Scar can agree with me but the best dunks ever were by Blue Edwards from East Carolina back in the late 1980s ... He threw down five of the best dunks I have ever seen in my life ... Talked trash the whole way down the court ... Kept looking at our bench and yelling trash at our bench as he threw down dunks left and right ... One time, he took off from the elbow of the free throw line, spread eagle and threw down a monster dunk ... He also threw down a dunk over our 6-10 center over his shoulder ...

RedDog, you had to bring up bad memories  Blue only finished with 22 because after a few dunks coach Meyer put me on him and told me to deny him full court which I did but it was way too late. We played them close but He really electrified the crowd. The dunk he got from the foul line was over D-Train (Derrick Williams). I remember the play so well because D-Train threw an inbounds pass over my head. He was under our bucket and I was at the top of the Key but D-Train knew he threw it away and was on a dead sprint to try to break up the dunk. He actually ran past me just in time to get in the poster as Blue jumped from the foul line (I am not kidding or exaggerating). The remember seeing a picture of the D-Train, foul line dunk in their media guide. I did get dunked on by ETSU (yes they got me first which is why I had to get them back). Calvin Talford kicked me in the head catching an alley oop. He had a nice one over Brett Badget at our place the night of the infamous event as well.... I will say that Gabe Martin has had some of the nastiest missed dunks ever too. You know when you miss but everyone still talks about the dunk, that it was special (although coach D would have loved to get the 2 points).

I was on the bench for that game, too. Blue was shooting turnaround jumpers and yellin' "HHOOOOOOOO!!!" Nothing but net. Scar, was that Cline he dunked on?
