Coaching Rumors Thread

Since the other thread is wondering way off topic...
...perhaps we can have one single thread to post rumors and what-if's. I got nothing, but my hope was for a splash with Gillen, but unless JB was trying to throw everyone off (which would not suprise me in the least), it sounds from the WLNI interview that Gillen would be a no-go.

I am a friend of Gillen but in my opinion he is not right for Liberty. Just because a guy has a recognizable name or coached in the ACC does not make him a good candidate. So many made so much of him spending time in Lynchburg a lot last year which I think is why he was not around much this season. He is kind of a low key guy believe it or not and doesn't like a big fuss made about him when he comes into the venue to just be around the game....I don't have any names other than the fact that I know that Stephon Leary would get my vote. I would like to see the program stay in the family but I don't know if that will happen. Julius Nwoso is rumored to be interested in helping Liberty get to a national level. I know Sly would like us to hold off on naming names until tomorrow but that is just my 2 cents...I am still sad for my friend Randy though.

All I know I heard John Wooden was a candidate. Fire up Falwell 1 and bring him back. Oh wait his offense is too predictable.
Is Ralph Sampson current on his child support payments?
Can Lou Holtz coach basketaball?
Bobby Knight uses Gods name alot?
Steve Alford might be looking for a job after the Big Ten tournament.
A.C Green is now married, he'd be a safe choice.
David Robinson looks bored.

Someone needs to call Dr. Borek up and have him fax us "The List" from the last "Nationwide Search" and just contact the next name on it. It worked before Right?

I will standby with the defibulator at half court if we go get John Wooden. "The Wizard" may have 10 more good years in him, he is only 92 I think.

I see Haize beat me to the John Wooden reference.

Maybe we should post REAL rumors and speculation.

I wonder if Rick Reeves is dusting off his resume'? He could say, "I coached a winning LU basketball team for years, before anyone ever heard of Cary Green. Now I want to come back and coach the men's team to a BSC championship!"

He is the coach at Palm Beach Atlantic right? My brother in high school has had some contact with him, and likes him alot. Hey maybe my bro would get a scholarship out of this

Stephon is a contemporary of Scar & I. And he's a Houston native to boot. I'm sure he'll be given consideration.

I know the new guy will want to set up his own staff- but what a shame it would be to lose the pipelines we've FINALLY (evidently) established.

gotta be a way...

What about the Mark Phelps speculation that someone threw out awhile ago (the former NC State assistant, current Arizona associate head coach.) That post is around here somewhere?

That's cool that it won't happen...but do you have any reasons off the cuff why it's "not gonna happen."

One of my old roommates from LU played high school basketball for him at Atlantic Shores in Va Beach (before he went to NC ST.). I called him the same day the "thought" was brought up on this site. He called Phelps and Phelps' response went something like this.... Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. I took that as he wasn't interested. Take it FWIW

1. Rob Lanier (former head coach at Sienna and current top assistant at UVA)
2. Rodney Watson (top assistant at SIU)
4. Larry Mangino (top assistant at Air Force)
4. Brad Stevens (top assistant at Butler)

All of the above meet barber's criteria as up and coming basketball coaches who have charactor and go to church.

My personal favorite is a man by the name of ED SCHILLING. Ed is the real deal and a perfect fit for LU.

I was impressed with Rob Lanier when he was the top assistant at Texas under Barnes before he got the Siena gig. He was a quality guy and an outstanding recruiter (I believe he signed TJ Ford among others if my memory is correct).
