Alex McLean Named Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Basketball Player Of The Week

Liberty junior Alex McLean (Bay Shore, N.Y.) has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played the final week of the regular-season, Feb. 19-24, as announced by the league office.

McLean averaged 28.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in Liberty’s two road wins this past week to help the Flames jump into third-place in the Big South standings. He shot 67.6 percent from the floor (23-of-34) and collected double-doubles in both games. Last Wednesday vs. VMI, McLean had a double-double in the first half with 20 points and 11 rebounds en route to career-highs of 40 points and 19 boards against the Keydets, both national highs for the day. He also was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line, including 8-of-8 at VMI. He tallied 16 points and 11 rebounds at Radford Saturday.

McLean helped the Flames to road victories at two locations the Flames had not won at in recent years. The last time Liberty won at VMI was Dec. 7, 1991 when the Flames topped the Keydets, 64-55. The last time Liberty won at Radford was Feb. 22, 1997 when the Flames beat the Highlanders, 89-75.

This is the first player of the week honor a Flame has garnered this season. The last time Liberty had a conference player of the week was on Feb. 26, 2006 when Larry Blair shared honors with Torrell Martin of Winthrop. The last time a Liberty Flame earned the honor outright was on Feb. 7, 2005 when Leo Lightbourne grabbed honors.

B.J. Jenkins grabbed freshman player of the week honors for the Flames earlier this season on Dec. 4

For those of you who may read this and wonder what the rest of us are talking about, the running joke around here is that the Big South holds a general anti-LU bias and as such goes to great lengths to avoid naming LU players for the Choice Hotels Big South Men's Basketball Player of The Week.

IRONY--the week LB captures the BSC all-time scoring title, his own teammate Ace drops 40 points and wins the BSC player of the week. Congrats to both Ace and LB!
