Brewington Reaches Out On Recent Roadtrip
January 4, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty junior guard Dwight Brewington is a great success story, playing Division I college basketball with 60 percent hearing loss. Brewington’s impact continues to reach far beyond the basketball court as well.

When the Liberty men’s basketball team was awaiting a delayed flight in the Jacksonville airport on Wednesday evening after playing defending national champions and third-ranked Florida the previous night, Brewington had the opportunity to meet a young boy very much like himself.

10-year old Tucker Wiseman of Jacksonville, Fla., was at the airport awaiting a flight to take him back to the Clarke School in Northampton, Mass., a boarding school he attends, after being home for Christmas break.

Wiseman has 100 percent hearing loss in both ears and attends the boarding school in Massachusetts to accommodate his needs. When it was brought to Brewington’s attention that there was a young boy nearby signing with his mother, the junior wanted to meet him.

“I remember how hard it was growing up with my impairment,” said Brewington. “I wanted to meet him and tell him to never give up on anything and never let others cast him aside because he can’t hear.”

I read this when the board was down. Meant to bring it up on friday when it came back up, but forgot. Definitely some positives. Really puts a postive image to that boy's friends and family on LU.

coach got an email from the mother thanking the team for being so kind to him.

we were watching a movie on my laptop when bj called the boy over to watch with us, and his mother told us that he was deaf. After she told us that bj went to get dwight and introduced them.

his mother got a call from the principle of his school telling her about how he kept bragging about his favorite player DWIGHT! (that was pretty cool) his mom said that he tries to play sports but the adults are just as mean as the kids.

dwight found another little friend at the asheville game. he was the ball boy. the boys father told dwight about his son, and how he is scared to wear his hearing aids in public. dwight encouraged him to wear them and don't worry about what other people say.

it's amazing how God works

fantastic.

good man, Dwight.

you have what counts in your heart.

I know I don't do this much but it fits:

"And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God"
(Mark 10:13-14).

I know, from me- shocking. :)

But as a parent- I know just how important (developmentally) that stuff can be for a kid. That interaction may change this little guys life forever. You never know.

Maybe its because of his personal experience with little ones, but he will be blessed for that kindness.

I dont know how many people had any dealings with Dewight when he first got her, but he's made great strides since he's been here...ask Manger, even the little things like what he reads in his spare time...thats great to see
