Funny thing about the CUSA Tournament… Liberty might have about 15 people on the bench, but somehow there will be 3,000 additional “assistant coaches” logged in from their couches. You know the crew. The Armchair Analytics Department. The Turnover Task Force. The “Too Small at the 4” Committee. All of them safely stationed behind a glowing monitor somewhere, typing at Olympic speed.
“Too many turnovers.”
“They’re too small."
“Why didn’t they run the offense through the post?”
“I would’ve pressed there.”
“Coach should’ve called a timeout.”
Honestly, we should start hearing the keyboard typing any minute now. And it does make you wonder… how many of these keyboard coaches are actually in Huntsville, Alabama for the tournament? Or is the entire “staff” operating remotely from the living room command center? It’s amazing, really. A whole army of experts who somehow never played Division I, never coached Division I, but apparently could’ve rebuilt the roster, redesigned the offense, and personally cut turnovers in half by halftime… all from behind a keyboard. Meanwhile the actual staff—who, minor detail, do this for a living—are busy trying to win basketball games instead of running a comment section coaching clinic. But hey, that’s March basketball. The tournament tips off, the Flames take the floor, and the Nation’s Largest Virtual Coaching Staff immediately clocks in.
Headsets? Nope.
Clipboards? Not necessary.
Keyboards? Warmed up and ready.

The LU Armchair Coach has entered the building… and yes, the clipboard is fully charged.

Liberty and Missouri State square off down in Huntsville at the Provost arena with the Flames sitting as a 5.5-point favorite. On paper it should be a pretty entertaining one, Missouri State can score a little wit that big tight end, but Liberty can score a lot, and somewhere in the middle the Armchair Coach will be analyzing every possession like he’s sitting three seats down from the bench which he maybe or at least like the rest of the posters on here think they are!

Now here’s the interesting part… there’s always the possibility we see something new at tournament time. From a HCRM team this isn’t the trend. Not saying it will happen tonight, but the Armchair Coach has been told or possibly seen that HCRM may throw a wrinkle in the system. Be prepared. Then again, if the Flames handle business and close out Boomer the Bear, Coach might just tuck that little surprise back in the playbook for another day. Either way, the one and only LU Armchair Coach prediction. Flames take care of business, cover the 5.5, and advance.

Now grab the popcorn… this one should be fun. 🔥

Well this statement in null and void. The grass isn't always greener in the other side huh......Some folks need to eat crow, but they won't. Guess the person who was looked as a hater for just stating opinions was on to something huh.... Now this is fun :D

Well… 17-3 in the conference was nothing to sneeze at but the way we have played defensively over the last 6-8 games led to the outcome tonight. It’s hard to believe that it was defense that cost us this year. We couldn’t stop anyone over the past few weeks. Looking forward to next season and a new batch of exciting recruits. It will be interesting to see how things come together.

That was a stinging defeat. As bad as I feel though, I know those Seniors, especially Porter, Metheny and Cleveland feel immensely worse. I've attended every home game for the past 4 years and can remember when Porter was a freshman and started his first game and I thought to myself what everyone did. "How's this little kid a starter at a D1 school?" He answered that question after his first few games and he instantly became my son's favorite player, despite the presence of Darius McGhee. I have a lot of fond memories at Liberty Arena the past 4 years and all of those guys plus McKay are the reason why. In the moment, it's easy to go on X, Facebook or Instagram and bash the performance or talk down to the team. In reality though, that's childish behavior and unbecoming of who and what we should be as a fanbase. I'm not one of these legalistic, rose-color glasses wearing people, but realistically speaking basketball at LU has been wildly successful and fun to watch for several years now. It starts with McKay and his leadership and approach to the game, the locker room and life in general. But players like CP0, Methreeny and Cleveland are unique and their efforts on the court and their actions off of it should be celebrated regardless of the outcome of the game itself. If you stay after the home games, all of those guys come out of the locker room to greet their families and loved ones, but they always hang out with the fans and the kids that look up to them. It's really special and I'm so thankful for the experiences we've had as a family at LU Men's basketball games, and I hope that McKay continues to write his legacy at Liberty University and that he continues to bring in high quality and high character players.
