As some of you know, this is Coach's baby. The point is to provide a stronger Christian background through basketball. There is a small piece of Scripture that members are encouraged to memorize every two weeks. We hope to do more with this next semester, but I figured I could start something on here about it.

In this thread I'll post the Scriptures for the week and we can discuss them and other things related to that. Discuss how this verse deals with sports or just basketball in general. Each verse is different. I wanted to put it in here instead of the Chapel because more people read this and it was started by the basketball program. Plus we could all use some of the Good Stuff in this forum occasionally.

December 8-December 21:
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Who leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

Cool Jon,

I already have Psalm 1 memorized from grade school. This is a good idea to keep this in the basketball forum.

Good thought, SJ.

We could always use a little more scripture around these boards.

Some exciting things happening soon in the LU basketball program.

This is great SuperJon.

This is a Psalm that can easily be a Proverb. It offers words of wisdom that should be heeded. One should not "hang out" with those who are wicked, evil, wrongdoers, etc., but read and meditate on what is good (the Bible). By also "hanging out" with those who are wise and are seeking after righteousness you will grow wiser and live a blameless life.

Jesus lived this out while on earth. He "hung out" with his apostles not the pharisees and scribes. He did seek to heal the lost but he did not spend his time with them. Just as a doctor's job is to heal the sick but does not spend his/her life with the patient once the doctor has done all (s)he could do for the patient. Jesus longs for us as christians to love those who are hurting spiritually and physically but not to the point where their lives negatively affect ours.

I hope this is useful. May this thread help us strive to be Champions for Christ!

I think it's great as well. I'm going to send $ 5.00 to whoever, get a tee shirt somehow, and memorize
the scriptures.

Thanks for getting this going here.

He "hung out" with his apostles not the pharisees and scribes. He did seek to heal the lost but he did not spend his time with them.
Just a friendly counterpoint: I have to point out that while Jesus confided in his disciples and spent a considerable amount of time with his students, he most certainly "hung out" with the outkasts, the broken and the downtrodden which were the reason for his tour on the third rock--actually demonstrating a preference to be with them.

If you look at the only times Jesus grew incensed with those around him, it was pointedly directed at the "religious crowd" for distracting from and convoluting his basic message of grace & mercy--the two points that draw the human heart toward God (not political clout.) He always had compassion for those who were broken and "knew not what they did" while His indignation was reserved for the folks who added there own "bull" to the message...a point that many in mainstream christianity would be well served to remember in their "lofty" positions (of course those that would apply to mainly would not recognize themselves due to being enamored with themselves...it's always amazing to see how people are compelled more by the universal demonstration of humility and are insatiably drawn to graciousness.)

There is a compelling parallel which would make a great thesis between the phsychological models of Authoritarian, Authoritative & Permissive human dispositions . I would argue that Christ most notably exuded an authoritative temperament. (If you have your textbook from Psychology textbooks, check it out. Sometimes leaders, most notably leaders of a moral persuasion, allow their pyschological disposition (a human inefficiency due to the fall) to seep into the message instead of truly trying to model Christ's more authoritative disposition and empathy.

Take the theological debate to the chapel. This is for dicussing how we can take this passage and apply it to our lives and/or sports.

Actually, I'm sorry. I thought you quoted one of the posts that was moved to the Chapel. Sorry.

I was just messing with you...I see what you meant though. The counterpoint did tend to veer from the original content of that verse.

As far as lessons from the actual verse: What lessons? You're at LU, there are no sinners there. :D

You could easily put this in the context of a team sport...
...A good team mate is unselfish, follows the teams rules, focuses on the task at hand, and is all about the greater good. In that way, the team bears fruit, the team grows, and the team prospers.

A great concept- nice to see SJ took the time to look into it, was open minded, and is spreading the word. Hope more students on campus get the message and at least give this team a shot.

(several unintended puns in there :D )

December 22-January 18:

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:7-9
