Healthy Holland helps out at the point for the Flames

For a basketball player, a groin injury is akin to torture, especially when the player in question is a defensive-minded guard who relies on extensive cutting and moving.
Liberty sophomore Justin Holland knows that pain all too well. Holland tweaked his groin in preseason workouts last season and never got completely healthy. The injury reduced him to a non-factor in Liberty's lineup and left him questioning his love for the game.

"Last year, I got to a point where I wasn't sure I was ever going to get back to 100 percent," Holland said. "It was real frustrating. My mom kept trying to encourage me on the phone. Once you have an injury like that, it just takes a toll on you mentally."

Holland, whose team plays Longwood at home Saturday, plays like he's cherishing every minute he's on the floor this season. His groin completely healthy, he's been a vital backup to starting point guard Damien Hubbard and has given the Flames a spark, especially on defense.

In 14.2 minutes per game, Holland has 16 rebounds and eight steals. He's fourth on the team with 11 assists and has hit 3 of 7 3-pointers.

"He definitely adds a defensive presence," Liberty guard Larry Blair said. "He's aggressive on the ball. He's got offensive talent as well. He can make you pay by knocking shots down or creating for himself. I'm glad he's well this year."

Everytime I read or hear his name I think to myself "I am from Holland. Isn't that weird?"

no one ever said he wasn't a good defender....You used the term "great" defender.........Great defenders don't really play in the big south

There have been great defenders in the Big South. Marcus White, Peter Aluma, Andre Savchenko, Pascal Fleury and Gabe Martin come to mind. Brian Woodson was a pretty good one too. I think Anthony Smith will end up being a tremendous defender and for that Matter Justin Holland will only get better. Ryan Mantlo was pretty good too on the defensive end.

Carl Williams, WVU tranfer, was one of the best defenders in the country, without a doubt. A great defender.

some of them should guard dickens then maybe he would see that sometimes a team two great defenders and not five. like gabe martin and ryan mantlo were GREAT defenders in any league for their position. unfortunately dees and blair were BAD defensively at that stage. smith, rell, alex, brew, justin, bj and an umproved lb seem to be coming together defensively.

I thank you need a translator, or a trip back to basic communications...
