2025:
Zander Carter- 6' 6" G
Andrew Grimes- 6' 8" F
2026:
Torr Sorenson- 6' 7" F
McKay has proven by now he knows how to evaluate players but I'll never get used to seeing high school sophomores committing. The move to CUSA has been good for recruiting though, we just keep adding more length and it seems like overall athleticism is improving as well.

How many mid-major programs do you think already have a '26 recruiting and commits forum?
Hopefully it's the result of McKay & Co getting in early before these kids blow up and bigger offers come flooding in. This team is shaping up to have some length in the next few years.

He's a local kid who appears to have reclassified when he went to the school up in Ohio. In other words, based on Coach McKay's recent penchant for having guys come in as early enrollees he likely will be with the Class of 2025.
His dad was a baller.

He was indeed. Last I saw he was a fishing guide in the area. Living the dream.

He may not be in the 26 class, but why do I get the feeling this guy is destined for Liberty?
A good start with 2 HS commits, but we will have at least 6 slots to fill next year. Of course some of them will no doubt come from the portal.

We just got a commitment from 6'5" CG Eli Sancomb. Best as I can tell/recall, if we can seal the deal in November with a NIL, this will be the first 4 star we have ever signed out of HS.
WV State POY and member of state championship team as a JR
Considering the commitments we have, I would not be at all surprised if all 3 are now off the table. Maybe we offer a bigger guy, or it's very possible we fill the 3 or more slots still open with transfers.

Reece Davidson signed his NLI today, completing a 3 man FR class which will be easily the highest rated in our history. Versatile 6'8" F who was coached in HS by Nate Valentine. Valentine also coached some guy named Kyle Rode.

This is a good recruit. Towson’s sizes gave LU a lot of problems. It’s too bad with all those sizes in the bench, none are ready to play. McKay continues with his small lineup and it’s does not go well against taller and athletic team like Towson. There was a lot of mismatch on defense and McKay did not seem to make an immediate adjustment. Porter was abused on defense.

You make it sound like we got crushed. We lost by 3 . Towson did dominate the boards (especially on the offensive end) and block 7 shots, so yeah, their size hurt us, but going 7-30 from 3 hurt us more. Towson is not that much bigger or more athletic than FAU, and small ball worked pretty well against them. Looks like Smith is getting close to 100%, and when Ihnen can play we will have a lot more options.

Nonetheless, the team cannot handle the size difference. What happens when the opponents defends the threes and the no threes are made and plus the sizes of the opponents is too much. Like this Bradley game. Then what? McKay continues to start the 2 small guards that is clearly cannot defend the bigger guards.

I can agree with both sides of all this but I think our schedule hurts us as well. I know all the reasons why our schedule sucks but playing the Carolinas (Rocky Mt. version) and Kentucky Christian just does not prepare a team for high level competition. With that said, I like this team, and I think we will come back and beat Bradley.

I do like the team. I will continue to cheer for them. My concern is that can the team sustain this kind of basketball throughout the year. The starters are undersized against the opponents. Harper keeps guarding the 6’11 opponents. I am not sure if this is sustainable.

I agree with you. We won’t be winning any national championships with 6’4” power forwards unless we find a Charles Barkley out there somewhere. Thankfully, we do seem to be making some size gains in recent recruiting. A healthy Ihnen will be helpful.

We have a bunch of 6’8s and 6’9s that are not playing or maybe are not ready to play. Also, We need those taller guards to play and defend. Harper is struggling against Bradley’s center.

I hope I'm wrong, but if we don’t start hitting the three-pointer more consistently—like what we saw today against Bradley—we’re going to keep losing these games. The issue is magnified by the fact that McKay continues to rely on undersized and less athletic lineups. I really thought our recent recruiting classes were supposed to bring more athleticism and size, but right now it just doesn’t look that way.
Watching Western Kentucky from our own conference nearly beat an undefeated SEC Vanderbilt team today really highlighted the difference. WKU looked bigger, more athletic, and more dynamic across the board. Meanwhile, we’re struggling with the same weaknesses that have cost us the last two games.
I truly hope McKay takes these recent losses seriously and finds a solution quickly. The talent gap in size and athleticism is becoming too visible, and if adjustments aren’t made soon, these problems will keep repeating.

Gotta love the concern trolls who only show up when we lose a game in any sport.

Thank you. This is exactly and I mean exactly my thought with this season. When the threes are not going in, what is the next best thing to do in basketball to stay competitive or help win a game? The answer is DEFENSE. This team is undersized in defense that they lacked contesting the opponent’s shots way too many times.
We had this debate 2 years ago about the team being undersized. Then, McKay recruited good size players. Then, we all including myself were excited about the new recruits with good size players. Then, we watched the last 3 games, the undersized starters plays about 30 out of 40 minutes a game. The 6’7 Cleveland is tallest starter. But usually the 4 out of 5 opponents jumps higher than him. And we saw the result. Personally, I think they got lucky against Vermont.
I look at this way, if you are a 6’8-6’9 player sitting on the bench and you witness the team gets beat on defense because of the size difference, you would be thinking, “Give me a chance.” This is why players get into the portal and transfer somewhere else.
Granted we do not know what is going on during practices. We do not know if those players are ready to play or not but this is every season, undersized players takes the front seat. Can this team sustain continuing with these starters?

I just hope we lose another game just so I can whine and complain on social media after every loss. It’s so much better than celebrating the wins. In fact, do you notice certain posters never seem to show up here for the wins?

I don’t know who you ate talking to. But I made positive and praising comments with the wins against Charleston and FAU. However, on this level of sports AI D1, teams will scout you. The other team may have figured out how to play us. Things has to improve. The pattern the last 3 games is not very promising.

I’ve watched a ton of basketball in my time, and I’ve seen plenty of these 3, 4, and 5-star “gems” get recruited by high and mid-major schools. And let’s be real, most of that ranking has less to do with talent and more to do with who the summer team coach knows or who’s got the best connections. Those stars are about as valuable as the coffee you’re sipping while typing away on your keyboard.
But hey, we can sit here and talk about what the coaches should or shouldn’t do all day long. I mean, it’s not like we have any actual coaching experience or inside knowledge, right? If the head coach doesn’t trust a player, those stars are just glitter—doesn’t mean a thing. Meanwhile, we can all pretend we know better from behind our screens, but at the end of the day, it’s their job on the line, not ours.
Cleveland , Mathany, and Porter have given three- four years of blood, sweat, and tears to this team. But I’m sure you all know better, right? must’ve been some sort of fluke. But no worries, after this season, we’ve got a fresh batch of taller guards with bigger star ratings coming in. Let’s see how that pans out, because I’m sure they’ll fix everything in the blink of an eye.
