This is long over due. I hope Alston is right behind him. I think Hess wore 10 and so did Alston. Hess also wore 11 so I don't know which number is going up. I hope some more of our guys come out for this. I will be there of course.

I am not sure Tshirt. I would say that if he agreed to come that some sort of healing has begun. He has come back millions of times though to work practices and to share with the team all of the points of emphasis for the upcoming season from an officials perspective. I am glad they are doing this and Haize, he is coming up from Durham at half time of the Duke UNCG game  Yes I would say that he is off that night.

I'm glad to see him getting some love. I was wondering why he, or Alston haven't had thier jersey retired. Seems like they had a good enough of a career to do so.

Dunton is the one who wanted to retire Hess' jersey. He is doing some nice things to involve the alumni.

A few people have suggested we "retire" jersey's of certain players, so it wasn't really a Dunton original thought. USUALLY when a jersey is retired if the coach he played for in available, they are invited to participate. Hopefully there will be a video tribute from his former coach. BUT I doubt he has been asked.

Is JM being asked back to the Alumni dinner? I saw they were asking all former coaches, players, etc. I haven't looked, but I suspect just by coincidence he probably has a game that night. Is there some tension between he and RD?

Last season when we did a tribute to Dr. Jerry Edwards for his 25 years of broadcasting service, Coach Meyer send a greeting via video. He could do something like that again if he is not available. I have not talked to him in a while. I may send him a text message to see if he even knows about it.

Is there anywhere online to see the records from pasts years? I was at LU from 02-06, but I have no idea what we did in the early 90's except for 94. If we were so successful, why did Meyer leave?

LU retires Hess' number

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
December 2, 2006

Karl Hess has plenty of pleasant memories from his playing time at Liberty.

As a senior in 1980, he captained a Flames team to 28 wins and a NCCAA championship game win over Point Loma. But he has trouble forgetting what could have been on a December night in Blacksburg.

The Flames, who were years from competing in NCAA Division I basketball, hung tough with Virginia Tech before losing 101-88.

"I won't talk about the refereeing," Hess said Saturday night, moments after having his No. 11 jersey retired at halftime of LU's game against East Carolina. "We probably should have won that one."

That's funny talk from coming from a man who makes a second career out of officiating college basketball games.

Hess, who lives in Forest, had a quick turnaround after working Saturday's Kentucky-North Carolina game in Chapel Hill. He works between three and six games a week, officiating in SEC, ACC and Big East games.

At halftime, Hess stood at center court with LU athletics director Jeff Barber as the P.A. announcer ticked off his career accomplishments.

Hess holds Liberty's career scoring record with 2,373 points. He's No. 1 in school history in field goals (951) and field goal attempts (1,798). He's also first In free throws (471) and free-throw percentage (89.9). He's also the all-time career assist leader with 648.

Hess holds the relationships he made at Liberty in as high regard as his career numbers. He fondly recalled sharing a dorm with several high-profile athletes, including former major leaguers Sid Bream and Lee Guetterman, current LU baseball coach Matt Royer and current Liberty wrestling coach Jesse Castro.

"Winning a small college championship was fun," Hess said.

"But the relationships with the people, those were just as fun."
