Big South Bias

Okay, I apologize for the subject header. I just wanted to get this post out there before the end of the season...

Remember last year when the conference awards were handed out, and despite having more deserving players on Winthrop or Liberty (Larry Blair comes to mind), the player of the year went to Coastal Carolina's Pele Pealey?

And does anyone else remember how Coastal Carolina finished with the seventh seed, and when I astutely pointed that out to the hot girl who works for the Big South conference (go to the staff directory, you'll know which one I'm talking about) she pointed out that Coastal's seeding didn't matter, because Pele led the league in conference-only PPG? Does anyone remember that?

Oh, I'm sure you do. Just thought I'd mention that, and the fact that Larry Blair is averaging 25.4 PPG in conference, more than four points above the guy in second place.

...Just thought I'd mention that now.

I think your feelings are held by most all of us on this board. The big question to me is why the league office holds the attitude toward us.

How about the fact that Aluma never won one in the regular season? Or the fact that Liberty has never had a POY in the regular season? How about the fact that Gabe Martin should have won the regular season in 2004 but they gave it to Danny Gathings? To add insult to injury they gave Blair's Tourney MVP trophy to Gathings (at least they were consistent). Last season Dees was the leading scorer in the conference in Conference play and was in the top 5 overall. At least last season we got 2 1st teamers. I thought Dees should have gotten POY last season IMO. Certainly not Paley. I thought Reggie Williams from VMI should have been Frosh of the year too but my opinion clearly is not worth anything to the Big South Conference. Larry is having an unbelievable year. It's not just points either. He shares the ball with his teammates and he plays just as hard if not harder on the defensive end. That is why if he keeps it up he will go down as perhaps the all time greatest guard of all time. He would probably get my vote anyway.

But it isn't like it is the league office that votes for awards...it's league coaches and SIDs (and possibly media)...but that being said, the only reason Blair didn't win that tournament MVP was due to a stupid voting format that got overhauled immediately after they realized it didn't work...

Your points are well taken, WEF. But that just shows how pervasive the attitude is toward us at the other schools as well. There certainly is some envy by some schools at our facilities and budget (I don't believe this applies to Winthrop or CCU). And as has been mentioned, some people just can't help but hold animosity toward our Athletic Department because they dislike JF so much.

Well voting is only 1/100 of what the bias entails....things like our track and field incident about 2 years ago and 1,000's of other things involving KK....I'll never forget the phone call JF had with KK and he was very upset about something he did and told KK that he would leave the BS in a heartbeat and he's already had a call from another conf. asking if LU would be interested in leaving (back when we just won the BS in Bball)....KK quickly changed his tone...it was pretty funny

Yeah, I talked with them after this incident and the way they had it set up, Gathings had so many votes, that even if he had scored 0 and turned the ball over 50 times in that last game he would have won. It wasn't mathmatically possible to beat him based on how many votes he had already gotten in the previous games. They overhauled it in time for the women's tourney. (probably so feenstra could lose it  )

Speaking of the incident with Gathings in the 2004 tourny, what a classy move by him to "give" the trophy to Blair in convo the next week. I had a distaste for him until then. After that point, I really respected the young man.

That was a classy thing to do on his part, because he definately didn't have to. But he is not a classy guy. He was just like the rest of those HPU punks.

I never said he was a classy guy; I just said it was a classy move.

And for the record, the Big South conference never recognized the fact that Larry Blair was given the MVP trophy -- until the NCAA gave Gathings the "Sportsmanship of the Year" award.

If only Jerry had just told KK that we were leaving the BS during that call and done it...wonder who that other conference was?

My guess was the A-Sun. Not exactly a step forward.

ASUN maybe not a stepping stone but I don't think the big south is going to get us any where. If all the teams that have left the BSC in the last 10 years or so we would be a decent conference. I don't have the stats from the touney when gaithings got the MVP but when you lose by 40 pts in a championship you don't deserve a MVP award. Also Josh McDougal is one of the best runner in the country and after a race they normally show the girl from coastal on the website who ended up in 273rd place.

Wasn't the ASUN after Radford? Anyway, I'd rather be in the Big South than in the ASUN, b/c normally the ASUN is a little weaker and it'd involve greater travel expenses.

radford was curious about jumping ship. former president covington was a driving force on that. now that RU has former va. lottery chief penelope kyle as their president who knows what they will try. i still cannot figure how this lady is a president of a university??!!

'cause Radford's a cow college.

...

"Hey, you're only calling us a cow college because we were founded by cows."
