Matt Olinger has been named Assistant to the Head Coach for MBB.

Not sure if there will be much change in responsibilities for him, but I predict we will hire a new Director of Basketball Operations, thus expanding our staff. If you look at UVA, they have a slew of basketball jobs. The only restriction the NCAA places is a limit of 3 assistant coaches.

assistant TO the head coach, a job title inspired by Dwight Schrute.

anyway. I love having long tenured assistants on the coaching staff.

I have a feeling any similarities between Matt and Dwight are limited to their job title. Nonetheless, you are correct. This is not Assistant Head Coach, or the more frequently used Associate Head Coach, which are the titles usually given to an assistant coach the HC deems worthy of a promotion. Matt has spent almost all of his time on our MBB staff as Director of Basketball Operations (where by all reports he does an amazing job) with one year as an interum assistant when we had an assistant leave just prior to the season and put us in a bind. This is no doubt primarily an administrative job, but one where he would work very closely with RMK, and certainly a position where you would want to have someone you trust. I´ll be interested to see whether they hire a replacement as DBO or go in a different direction. It´s also possible that this is strictly a promotion and a reward for Matt´s great work, but with the way well funded programs are expanding staffs beyond the traditional 3 assistants, DBO and S&C positions, I expect to see us add someone.
