Didn't sound good early. Our coach was talking North Florida up, but based on their results so far, they don't seem to be so great. Boy, wouldn't it be great to have a good basketball season...

Back in highschool, early 80's, that song was still pretty popular (and we had some decent men's basketball on campus)

My rapid reaction... we lost to a bad team. Fine- I can only handle so many surprises out of Liberty athletics in a few days..

Losing to UNF by 20 points is ridiculous.

LU basketball is like Virginia Tech football, "offensively challenged".

We do not have enough "shooters" to win.

Recent results have been disappointing for sure but it's to early to panic IMHO. North FL was not off to a good start, but I'm not so sure they are a "bad team" They were picked to finish second in the ASC.

IMHO, the way the college game is structured, with a 3 point line which is close enough for that shot to be very makeable, you can't win shooting only 11 3s a game like we did last night. We made 5 of them, which is a great %, and the guys we recruited to be shooters, Kemrite and Reid, made 4 of those in only 6 attempts. Why so few? NFU jacked up 31 and made 12.

After a promising start, Gielo has reverted to form and pulled a disappearing act the last couple of games. He needs to come to play every time out for us to be as good as we can be.

Most all our players are inconsistent. They will have a good game one night, and not show up the next night. We need a couple scorers who we can count on for 15-20 points every night.

My early thoughts about this team:

Still trying to figure things out offensively but I know what I would do...Get Gielo at least 15 shots a game. I have been on the Gielo train with Purple for 4 years but this year I expect a guy with his skill set as a SR to shoot more than 6 times in a game. You think Seth Curry would have ever only taken 6 shots? NEVER. Gielo is too good to not be taking double figure shots.

Secondly you need more scoring out of the 2 guard position. AC Reid has shown he can shoot off the bench and is giving a nice lift at times with his 3 point shooting. Those are complimentary numbers to a scoring 2 that starts in front of him. The problem is that the 2 guard in front of him Moller isn't scoring.

Third I think the team has to look for early offense and transition buckets. There are way too many possessions that go under 10 on the shot clock with guys passing up good looks earlier in the possession. There are certainly times to be patient on O but not nearly every possession.

60 points per game won't get it done at this level. Winthrop and teams that beat you up on Defense can get it done in that range but most need to have enough fire power to get to 70 or so.

Turn Gielo loose!

12/21 from the FT line...that is unacceptable on ANY night.

Spot on about the lack of scoring from the 2 SCAR. If Moller doesn't step it up soon, we need to use Reid and Kemrite more, and his role would be backup PG. I also totally agree about passing up good looks early in posessions. Too many times it results in a forced shot as the clock winds down.

I guess I look at the Gielo situation a bit differently. Did Layer turn him loose for 1 game against Delaware and cage him against everyone else? I don't think so. He is a Senior. He needs to be more assertive game in and game out.

What's weird about that is only one player missed more than 1 FT. James Johnson went 2-4. A bunch of guys went 1-2.

I see what you did there!

I see 3 possibilities
The first being he is being asked to 'facilitate' more. I agree that if he were unleashed we would fare better. But I'm not sure he is allowed to.
Or
Gielo saw how having one player dominate the ball the last few years destroyed chemistry and doesn't want to be 'that guy'. Which means he doesn't realize he is immensely more talented than the other guy.
Or
He's or best/only option and defenses have adjusted accordingly to a 'Anyone but Gielo' scheme.

I dunno but I wish he'd just cut loose. Even if he's being 'caged' I'd love to see him break out. If the last 3 seasons have showed anything it's that DL won't bench someone for that.

Yes Oldflame I think it is incumbent upon Gielo to be more assertive. He was aggressive against Delaware. I haven't seen the other games since but his sheer number of shots indicates that maybe he hasn't been as offensive minded as he should be. He is a MAJOR player IMO. He needs to play like it every night.

SCAR the only thing Gielo is missing is he doesn't believe or act like a MAJOR player..he doesn't have that killer instinct which is what really elevates players from being good to great. He has the tools but I don't think he will realize his potential.

Ryan Kemrite has taken 6 3 pointers in his college career and made 5 of them. Based on what Layer and others have said, he does it all the time in practice (going back to last year when he redshirted.) Now that he has shown he can do it in the games, I think we need to get him more looks.
