I learned at the outset on this forum that we were not supposed to "Hijack threads." I now notice that
whether the subject is anything from "lookalikes" to "attendance" it ends up being an opportunity for a very small core of disgruntled and agenda-laden posters to unleash a torrent of criticism on Coach Dunton. "Hijacking" at its finest! I'm greatly encouraged to see that most on the forum see these attacks as unbalanced. The fact is that some of it is flat out slander.
Some I have spoken with believe that Dickens is hurting the site. I know I'm sick of seeing his baloney. I don't know if his problem goes all the way back to Doug Stewart or not, but I think a teenager ought to be cultivating some respect for his elders along with the rest of the fine education he is getting at LU. It is discouraging to see someone who is supposed to be supporting LU trying to find the cloudy lining in every silver victory.
Mr. Dickens, Coach would love to meet you face to face. Come to Midnight Madness, introduce yourself, get a handshake, and then Coach will make time to talk with you when you can sit down over a cup of coffee or whatever. I can be contacted, and the invitation offered is sincere and credible. For whatever reason, you have an axe to grind, and its turned you into a hatchet man. If you've ever had a conversation with Coach, I don't believe he knows of it. He has no reason not to want you on board with the program, and going forward with the program rather than against it, which, despite what will be your protestations, is a position you have placed yourself in. Basically, you find yourself wishing for things to go badly, so that you can continue chopping. It's not good for anyone, including you. It has to be robbing you of some of the joy of being a member of the Liberty Family. Go meet him, and talk to him.
Furthermore, in the two years prior to last year's disappointing season, we were 23-9 in league, and 15-1 at home. Surely that is not something to be ashamed of, and just as surely, it was not accomplished with Hankens-holdovers. Not to bash anyone, but this was done on the heels of some bad seasons. I believe LU basketball is going to see its best days in the near future. Near future.
Speaking-wise, Coach is the featured speaker tonight at the Virginia Beach Coaches Clinic, and on the 21st at the Central Virginia Coaches Clinic. Student body-wise and spirituality-wise, the Big Question might be, "How do we change lives?" One of the answers is "By getting the Word of God into their lives." Enter what I think is a great idea, a program termed "Faith In The Furance." The text Scripture is Romans 10:17 "So then, faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Coach, the staff, and the team, are hoping to get 4,000 students to join the club (cost - $5.00) and by being a member, receive a tee-shirt which says on the front, "We Believe" with a nice logo on the back. There will be eleven verses on faith, and they will be included (the references) on a lanyard which each member will also receive. Kick-off for that program is soon.
Points here are: Coach is getting out to the public, he does want to impact the student body as a coach and as a spiritual leader, and things are moving in a very positive direction talent-wise. Not to invoke anyone else's name here, but some of those who post and who are "experts" in talent and assessment, seem to be encouraged in what they see at practice. That should mean something, as these men
are long-time LU supporters and/or players, some of whom go all the way back to Bro. Jeff Meyers, and they could not possibly be considered to be "Dunton Apologists."
Responsible criticism is respected. I ask that we be careful of our "hijacks." If we want to make it a war-zone, let's just name a thread "I Hate Dunton" and everyone can launch their volleys from there.
Honestly, I might not even read them, because on the whole, I believe it to be counterproductive,
but I also believe that every now and then some of these things demand to be addressed. I'm just
optimistic enough to believe that Mr. Dickens could enjoy the experience with Mr. Dunton.
Proverbs 16:7
When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
