WU pretty much depends on the three-ball to win games this season. So if the Eagles are shooting well from outside, they'll probably do well tonight. The problem for the Eagles is that the defense looks great on some nights (ie the VMI and CSU games/wins) and pretty porous on other nights (see Asheville/High Point/Radford losses)...and generally WU's defense doesn't do well on the road. I can't get a really good read on either of these teams, so I'll probably assume it will be a close down to the wire game. One team will make the plays in the final minute, one won't, but I have no idea which team it will be (well, I'll pick WU to do it, but that's because I'm a homer).

From the prince of Rock Hill (Marshall)
To the grinder in (Peele)
To the cheer leading/marketer (Kelsey)

Winthrop is stuck in mediocrity. Flames win by 6-8 points.

If that's the scenario, I know which.

Winthrop up 30-27 at half. Gielo had gotten banged up pretty good on one play, but is back again. Drew Smith has been playing well in first half. The rest of the Flames (i.e. Marshall) same old play as past couple games (in not really showing up firing on all cylinders).

I think that only 200 have been said to be in attendance for this game at first estimate of tip off with tonights Ken Ham Creation debate vs. Bill Nye taking place, and with the fact that well, we're 9 - 14.

For some reason I just come to expect it. Sorry my attitude is bad but I don't expect to win like some of our other Liberty sports.

This debate was a bad idea... Bill Nye is a very smart guy and debates like this never turn out well.

Embarrassing!!! At least a couple of guys still want to play. :( Listed at 1615 attendance good thing most of these were paid for!

If we are waiting for the team to be better and then hope the attendance will approve - it will never happen. Liberty needs to find a way to get students to support the team whether they are good or not, when we look like LC could beat us... Then the paid attendance will increase. People want to be entertained and watching a game with fans makes games more exciting. Without fans - the team will not get better. Why? Because good players want to play for a school that loves basketball and when a recruit looks at Liberty they don't see the support. If they came to visit and there was 8,000 loud fans, they want to be a part of that and wonder - what if they were good? I want to be here when that happens.

I take full responsibility. My 7 week old son watched the game on TV tonight with me. The team is 0-5 when he watches any part of the game. He even slept with his back to the TV in the 2nd half and that didn't work. I'm sure Jeff will give Layer a few more years to figure it out. It takes 8 years to really get a program going. Here's to another 6 win season in Big South play. Someone help me with the math here... We are spending about $200,000 a year for every win in conference play?

So, your little man got tired of hearing SCAR drone on and on and said the heck with it and crashed in the second half? Sounds like a pretty smart kid to me. :D

I don't know why I didn't blame you from the beginning. I'm slipping.

Thanks. Yeah he is pretty smart. He loves to watch Horse Racing. It hasn't changed to much. When my wife goes back to work next week, I may have a different answer for you.

The problem with your theory is that over the years we have switched from a basketball school to a football school.
Also, the game day experience is not even remotely close to fan friendly. Yes the contests at breaks are great but ingress and egress, concessions, seating etc need a lot of help

It's definitely NOT Layer's fault. The fans are first to blame, then it's athletic marketing, then it's the football team, then it's the seats BUT NO ONE SHOULD BLAME LAYER. If you blame Layer, than you're to blame for the loss too.

What the crap? We ARE a football school. Game day fan experience is not good. Neither have to do with Layer or the product on the floor. THAT is a coaches responsibility

Yes, I understand that we are a football school. My point is that being a football school and attendance doesn't translate to a bad basketball team. Go ask Duke football how much help they had establishing a good football program. 6 years ago, you couldn't get 10k fans to a game and Coach K had his will with the athletic budget. Yet somehow, David Cutcliffe converted Duke football into a winning program. He didn't need fans. Tons of basketball coaches have converted losing, pathetic basketball programs, without fan support, into winning programs. Yes, we are a football school, and even if basketball starts to succeed, we'll remain a football school. Honestly, that's where 95% of the money is in college athletics. But lots of basketball coaches are finding ways to succeed at football schools. That excuse is ludicrous.

Not really

I'm agreeing with you. The product on the floor is a coach's responsibility. But that doesn't make the other statements untrue.
