He was blocking every shot that came in there but James Johnson plays like a grown man and was taking it to him physically. Johnson called foul 4 or 5 straight possessions and the guys on the sideline were teasing him about it in good fun. Brendan definitely needs to gain some weight but he has solid basketball skills already. Obviously he is still raw but you can see he has potential.

Disclaimer: The above assessment was based on about 10 minutes of "open gym" hoops.
at 7'2", he should be blocking everything that came in there against a Big South team if he even only has an "average" vertical for a guy of his size. My educated guess is that a 7'2" basketball player, at worst, only has to jump a few inches to touch the rim.
Yeah but just being tall doesn't mean you know how to block shots. There are guys that NEVER get their shot blocked even by 7-2 guys because they know how to use their bodies or they have a good floater. But you are right, with those long arms, standing at the rim, he will get his share of blocks. Even in the Big South, he is going to get his head mashed on a lot though if he doesn't bulk up. I am confident I would bang on his head in my day :D

Brendon is participated in the Phenom 150 camp a couple of weekends ago, VT and UVA are showing real interest in him. Lets hope the coaching staff learned their lesson from Braxton, Just because a kid signs , doesnt mean we stop recruiting him.

Can't let it go, can you. First of all, Brendan is a long way from signing with anyone, and it's looking more and more like we will have to beat out multiple major programs to get his signature on a NLI. Being the first to offer can't hurt, but it probably won't make a lot of difference when it comes time to sign in a couple of years. Secondly, none of us really know what was or was not done by our coaching staff to "retain" Braxton Bonds. There just seems to be an assumption that since he left it must not have been "enough".

What's the source on him having verballed? It's highly unusual for a 10th grader to commit. verbalcommitts.com shows him as being undecided. We are still currently his only offer, but that will change soon no doubt. The other thing with Brendan is the fact he is not likely to play 3 more years at Faith Christian, which is in a pitiful conference. I would be surprised if he doesn't transfer after this year to have the opportunity to play with and against better talent.

R I...1) what reliable information do you have that he has indeed committed? 2) unless you are either a) related to Braxton and his family or b) closely connected (I.e. working for in most cases) to the basketball program, you really can't speak with any assurance that they ever "stopped" recruiting him, and 3) how in the heck do you know how they are handling the recruiting process with young Mr Newton?

I have spoken to several area coaches and they say this kid is going to be great. Has improved tremendously since last year and is going to be a top 10 talent in the Nation. VT, UVA and Liberty have offered... Let's hope he wants to be the part of something big on the Mountain...

For what it's worth, as a sophmore Brendan is averaging 16.8 ppg. We'll play him on Dec 19th, hope to get a better look at him then.

Roanoke on a Friday? Don't you play them at home? I'll be in Roanoke earlier in the week. Can you reschedule to like Thursday?

I'll do my best to reschedule! It's part of the Jingle Bell Christmas Tournament, thus the early time and no return trip yet. We may play them at home this year, would be in January if we do.

Brendan has received his second offer, from App. State. More and bigger to come for sure, but we can always say we were first.

We (New Covenant) play at FCA-Roanoke tonight. We'll see how Brendan has improved since last year. He won't face anyone taller than 6'2" in his first two games.

There was a Brendan Newton sighting at the game Saturday. Saw him with my own eyes. Was escorted back to the locker room by Jeff Barber and back to his seat a little to the right of the team's bench. I guess this might be a good sign.
