A Few Thoughts

Hello,

I'm a Colorado State alumni that attended from 2005-2009, and now currently live in Virginia working in the engineering industry. I just wanted to stop by because I saw that Liberty hired Colorado State's own Dale Layer back in 2009 (following me I guess, haha), and wanted to give a few thoughts. Dale Layer always struck me as a great man who cared very much about his players and brought a very respectable reputation to Colorado State. I really feel bad though for you good folks at Liberty who have hired this man for successful coaching hopes.

Dale Layer first and foremost was not even close to a competent coach when he was at Colorado State, a very nice man and a very good representative of the school, but was pretty bad as a coach. Many people were ecstatic when Layer was let go from Colorado State as a coach because we felt the program would head in an even better direction under a new coaching staff. Layer always preached about his "defensive philosophy", I had no idea what this meant when he couldn't coach offense or defense to save his life.

Another thing that Layer did that sent Colorado State down a path of pathetic mediocrity was his constant attempts to turn the program into a stage two JUCO players, it got tiring after a good while and essentially destroyed the program. Again, I feel bad for the Liberty fans who want this program to be successful. Dale Layer is a great man personally and a very respectable representative of your guys' fine institution; However he is not close to a competent to a Division I coach. I wish luck for you guys the rest of the season, I hope success comes to the basketball program soon.

Actually, he has shown himself to be very competent and an excellent coach. Especially defensively (this year being the exception). Unfortunately, he seems to be a very poor recruiter. And these days that seems to be more than 50% of the job. There is a serious lack of talent and athleticism. Just a lot of raw potential gus and shooters. Not a winning formula.

I just tend to lean a little more on the skeptical side, so I somewhat doubt that this CSU profile or story is even legit. Thats my two cents.

Highly doubt it...ToC has a beef with JB because he fired his best friend (or something) the basketball coach and I guess he believes that if he hadnt of been fired we wouldnt be in the mess we are in

The only reason Layer is our coach now is because McKay hired him as an assistant. As far as I know he wasn´t even on our radar when we were looking for a coach in 07.

When we hired him as HC after Richie left, I felt like it was a ¨safe¨hire but far from a home run. I love what he has done in continuing what McKay started in getting the program on track as far as academics and overall comportment is concerned. Wish he could have won more games as he did it.

There's a reason he's a top assistant at Top 25 programs. The dude can coach. He can make players better. At some point though, players tap out their potential. If their ceiling wasn't very high, there's only so far you can go. I think LUconn was spot on.

I still like the idea keeping Layer as HC and hiring RD as an RC (Recruiting Coordinator).

CJ, I like you ,but this is the worst idea you have ever had. First, there is zero chance of it happening, and if it did, RD's focus would not be on recruiting at all. We need to ban the next person who brings up RD. IT'S OVER!!!!!! :)

Such a true statement. His focus would be the same as it was his last few years under Meyer. Trying to figure out how he could shove Layer under the bus and become the head coach.

Jeff Meyer. I must be forgiven for missing this last night. I had other thing on my brain.

I will give credit to BJ for self Meyering
