Where have all the ballers gone?

Facing the facts ... our men's program is pitiful. I read the AP story on the G'town game and it was saddening to say the least.

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=323190046
"With all due respect to Liberty, we got some games coming up, and we're preparing for some teams that are a little bit better than them," said Lubick, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. "We use these games to find ourselves, to find what this team's identity is going to be. ... I don't think our sense of urgency's really been there."
"We probably caught Georgetown on a night that they weren't quite as inspired as they will be later in the year. It's understandable," Liberty coach Dale Layer said. "I thought we played our best that we've played, and it took every bit of our best just to kind of hang in there and not be a 30-point blowout."
"I think they blocked one shot seven times on the same possession. And that's not something we're used to," Layer said.
This is ridiculous. It's like Angola vs. USA or something. Can't we get some legitimate players?

In the late 90s when hung with teams from the big conferences and actually looked like a D-1 program. It's hard to watch the teams we've had the last few years. What happened?

End rant.

Hope the kids pull out some wins this year.

You raise frustrations that have been discussed ad nauseum ad infinitum already the last couple years foundsheep. That said, you cant be singularly negative around here , because we have had quite a few people that have come through and used that tack and they didnt really last long.

He is not the only one questioning the direction of the program, BJ. This hasn't been discussed ad nauseum either. We have legitimate problems that were hidden because we had a very good player in Jesse Saunders. Sly, at the game did you find any player(s) taking on the leadership role? It seems like we need to bring in someone who can get talent on the mountain.

Im not saying he is the only one doing it (Im doing quite a bit of wondering myself). The thing is that, while raising concerns about the direction of the program, fair as they may be, you have some very well seasoned folks around this board who are going to challenge you at times and it will be good to put a lot of thought into your posts and force you to come correct. If you sound like youre merely complaining or being singularly focused, you wont last long (how many people have gotten run off in the last year?)

well as a student and been at the university for 3 years and attending nearly every home game unless students weren't on break. I just have not seen any basketball talent in a leadership role on the court apart from Jesse Sanders. Jesse would come to us and thank us for coming before the game would even start. No other players have shown that care for his school. Jesse was a flame at heart and represented the school well. We need to get that passion in the players for their school. Look at what Bob Huggins recently did at WVU. After their embarrassing loss, he took every WVU logo practice gear from his players and preceded to say til you play for the name on the front of the jersey rather than the name on the back, you wont have WVU gear. Our team needs that same kind of character in representation of the school...We have a ton of chiefs but not enough indians.

Also as a student i need to show my devotion to the team and the school. Ill be at the games win or lose because Lu is my school. When i chose to come here i made it my school. I've had to drop my WVU gear which I love so much and replace it with some red and navy. but this doesn't negate the concern I see with the program.

Traitor!

haha I've had to do the same my self. Well I blend it. Sometimes I do wear a WVU jacket which will tick off some people on here but whatever. Nothing I'm not used to hearing with everything else I have to say.

Well I don't see the talent.

And I don't see the program improving as the recruits that Layer is currently bring in or looking at are the same kind of players, undersized, unathletic guards/forwards.

*Shrugs

Serious Gardner Webb is without TWO starters and playing with 8 scholarship players and yet they beat Depaul and nearly upset Iowa. As someone said those quotes are pathetic.

to ask the question 'where have the ballers gone' would mean at one time we had an endless supply of talent flowing into our program. We have seen a few talented players here and there but this program has never had 'all the ballers', just sayin.

I agree, Burrus and Gielo are not going to save this team. Poor Davon Marshall, he's the only player we have (right now). It is an absolute chore to watch this team and this program, it's the same ol same ol. Layer seems like a nice guy and has cleaned up the program it appears, but we flat out stink. Layer has proven his resume, mediocore at best. I said it 4 years ago when the hiring was made and it's been proven out.

It's amazing to me that we have people calling for Toman's head in the baseball forum when he has done light years better than Layer. He can't beat Coastal, a legit top 25 program. Well i've got news for you, Basketball isn't beating anyone. The program is an embarassment. I think it's really hurting our efforts to move up to FBS. I mean you don't have to be a big time analyst to see we have very little athleticism and as Ballah said, Layer continues to go after more of the same.

Starting to look like Karcher's last year.

He was even quoted in today's paper after the 15-point loss to powerhouse Elizabeth City, 65-50, played at "home" at the Lynchburg Armory:
"Much improved effort with ball possession tonight...Unfortunately our shooting was a struggle from the three-point line and charity stripe."

They aren't a very good shooting team. At least from what I saw.

VUL may get out-shot on a given night, but they will never be out-coached!

I would say we miss one who is starting for Stetson more than the one at ASU. Chris Perez is averaging 13 and shooting a very high % like he did for us. Evan is throwing up bricks in large numbers.

and Patrick Konan is putting up 13 and 6 for UNH. Layer got talent, he just couldn't keep it.

I just hope Barber will go after a young motivated coach. Yeah, he'll treat Liberty like a stepping stone but maybe he would make Liberty relevant in the process. Tired of these mediocre coaches.

If it's Barber making the decision, he will go for the name. It's what he does.
