Wesley Alcegaire
6' 5" Shooting Guard/Small Forward
Miami (FL) Archbishop Curley Notre Dame HS
Liberty just added Wesley Alcegaire, a 6-5 wing from Miami Archbishop Curley, per a source. 6th commitment.
This is a surprise.

For us to have a scholarship for Wesley, someone else needs to transfer. I guess that would be Baird. We could really use a solid swing player. Hopefully this will not be Asaad Woods volume 2.

Impressive numbers for Wesley this year. 28 points and 11 boards per game, and he was first team all-Miami Dade county. Makes you wonder why he was still available this late in the game.

It may not be Baird that's leaving...it maybe one of the earlier signees may not qualify according to NCAA standards... I don't know, I'm just guessing.

I would prefer this scenario, I think!

Makes me think he is getting replaced. Possibly staying at LU and not playing basketball?

Wouldn't surprise me at all, but based on what TBGBG said earlier, I think it would be voluntary. This is a kid who might well have gone to LU if he wasn't an athlete. He took a year off from basketball before he came to Liberty, so it may just be that he has other priorities.

He didn't take a year off, he blew his knee out, missed a year due to injury...most kids that are not 100% healthy realize college sports aren't that fun anymore.

He did take a year off. His senior year of HS. Thanks though

Maybe Lang will be able to find out something now that we've announced about the FBS study.

Not to be flip, but trying to find out whether or not the guy who didn't play a minute from January on and was plastered to the bench for much of the season is transferring is fairly low on my list of priorities right now.

Nothing wrong with that...just figured you might know something (what with the usual round of speculating as is apt around here)

Yeah because he was hurt...and if he did take a year for 'just wanting to' then why sign he to begin with...that's just bad recruiting is what you are telling me...LU signed a kid that wanted to chill his senior year...
Makes me question the recruiting tactics if that is for sure what Baird did.

Yep that's what I'm telling you. He was hurt his Freshman year at LU. I was never high on Baird, myself.

The two "highest rated" recruits LU signed in the last few years managed to be total non-factors during their time here ... McMasters and Baird. I have no idea what to make of these recruiting rankings any more.
Arlon Harper was the lowest rated recruit in CSU's class last year and probably ended up being the best (or maybe co-best with Nimley) player in the bunch.

Stephen Baird's current teammates are accountants and IT consultants with bald spots and beer guts.
He was on a Madison High School basketball team last year that was ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation. Next season, he'll be playing Division I basketball.
This was supposed to be his senior season.
Instead, a recreational league at the Jewish Community Center is the closest thing Baird has to competitive basketball.
Baird, 19, would be one of the area's top high school seniors — if he were attending a high school.
He is being home-schooled this year, forgoing his final season of high school eligibility.
“I know it doesn't make sense, but basketball didn't seem right this year,” he said.
“Sometimes, I crave basketball like crazy and ask myself why I'm doing this. But I know it was the right decision.”
Elite athletes often opt for home schooling rather than public school, but in individual sports such as tennis and gymnastics. Not in team sports.
Baird signed with Liberty University, a school in Virginia that last made the NCAA tournament in 2004. Until he goes to school in June, he'll prepare by playing in the weekly rec league and working part time as a basketball referee at middle school games.
“We all get senioritis,” said former Madison teammate Tyler Wood. “I think Stephen got the worst case of it.”

Wesley has signed his NLI.

In fairness to Layer, when we signed Baird I'm pretty sure the plan was that he would be playing with JC Sanders for HCYA that year. I think he played a game or 2 and then decided it was too long a commute.

Sanders also got hurt his senior year, which kind of threw a wrench in things as well.
Baird is the one who is leaving. I think he's just done with playing college basketball. Had a nagging knee problem to go along with the ACL rehab. Unfortunate for him that he never got to show what he could do when healthy. Sometimes things just don't work out.
