What are you trying to say about Dunton, Proto?!?!

No seriously, lets talk hoops. VMI is better than expected thus far but let's face it, we're at home and we're not as bad as our record would suggest. If we can muster up a decent crowd we can beat the snot out of them. This is our 2nd *real* conference home game (thanks BSC) so we should see a vast improvement.

I haven't seen VMI play yet this year and I haven't seen LU play since the High Point game, so I'm glad this one is on TV so I can see how these two teams look right now...

And this game could go a long way to determining who will be sitting out of the conference tourney at the end of the year...

VMI is not as bad as last year - that's for sure. I stand behind my earlier statements - Liberty has a lot of room for improvement and growth, but they can beat anyone at home. Even Winthrop!! We will need to play good to beat VMI, we will need to play great to beat the remaining teams from the BS at home, and even better than great to beat Winthrop.

What can really help is a good 6th man for the team (legal disclaimer - please ignore this statement if I'm violating any current patents at Texas A&M or another NCAA program :) I actually have a patents pending for the following statements (so be mindful of your post and please help be police this by letting me know if any school or announcers use any of my patented terms - Thanks) -

Lay-Up
Air Ball
Bomb
Jumper
Dimes
On Fire
Fired-Up
Dishes
Deep Treat
Packed House
Tre
Shut Down D
Big Man
Defense, Defense
Assist to Turnover Ratio
Cleaning the Boards
Wiping the Glass
Oooohhhhhhhhhhhh

I wish it weren't on TV so I could see it streamed online.

Cool poster, proto. I downloaded it and used a different host to get the pic to show. I'm not sure why the other one didn't work.

Here's my standard preview in a nutshell:

Image

VMI Official Site

VMI Sports Talk Yahoo Group

Overall Record: 7-12
Big South Record: 2-6

If you need an idea of how well the Keydets have been playing despite a 4-game losing streak you only need to look back to Monday night when they nearly upset Winthrop in Lexington. Their last victory was a couple of weeks agao against us up in Lexington. Obviously homecourt advantage should play a key role in chagning our fortunes tomorrow night.

As far as their players are concerned, two stand out above the rest:

Image
#55 Reggie Williams
6' 5" 185 lb Sophomore Forward
Averaging 20.1 Pts & 7.1 Rebounds

Image
#22 Matt Murrer
6' 7" 185 lb Junior Forward
Averaging 13.5 Pts and 7.7 Rebounds

Thanks Proto, I have now been reduced to saying hi, my name is Tim on the air. Everything else is off limits :D. Sly, I believe the game is still going to be on the Liberty Channel and thus will likely be streamed. I will not be calling this game as we talked about earlier on another thread but I am sure my coleauges from the Big South will do a good job. Matt Hoague is a really good PBP guy and this year they have brought in the coach Cliff Ellis who has done some ACC work. I watched his call on Suday at FSU when Miami came a-callin. Since I am not calling the game, I will not be in the house because I am working in Richmond now. I would love to come back and watch but I am in the beginning stages of understanding my project so I will not be able to get away. I will try to catch the game online as well. No Comcast Sportsnet in my hotel. I talk with Jason Allison, assistant coach at VMI a lot and he told me that they are really, really struggling right now. I watched their game vs Radford on TV and their freshman have hit a wall and their interior play is superior only to ours in the Big South at this point. Truthfully there is a lot of ball left to be played and a lot to play for. This team can come on strong at the end and could be a dangerous out in the tournament. First we have to win some games and get in the thing. Tomorrow would go a long way towards healing the psychological wounds that we may have at this stage of a tough season.

Sorry absturgill but you can still catch my work on the remaining 4 home games (see my signature below). Like I said, this broadcasting team should do a fine job (They have done a good job this year of getting a decent color guy :D ). Sly, you forgot to mention the Holmes twins. They are freshmen that have sort of fizzled of late. The interesting fact is that they have a cousin by the name of Larry Blair.

According to that link from the Big South website, Nate Ross will be the color commentator (unfortunately) and the game will be broadcast live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast, Comcast Sports Net Mid-Atlantic, and Fox College Sports Central...Also, for a fee you can catch it online on the Big South Edge....The Liberty Channel will air a replay on Friday night at 9:00 (doesn't mention anything about the Liberty Channel showing it live)....

Good to know WEF. I am tivoing it and will watch it on Friday night when I get back home. No comment on Nate Ross other than he is a nice guy and I wish him well. I guess Coach Ellis has another ACC gig.

I didn't mention the Holmes twins because I didn't see where they had done much the fe wgames where I looked up the numbers. But if they are LB's cousins, you know they'll be motivated to impress him when they come to town.

I thought I had seen earlier where there wouldn't be a web stream for the game. I guess I'll be depending on Jerry Edwards again if I can get the audio stream to work this time.

Congrats on the Richmond assignment, Scar. I know how unnerving it can be between assignments. But its too bad I'll miss you when we drive through Virginia. Richmond would definitely be way off the beaten path for us.

I figured it would be Sly but I had to throw it out there. Yes at one point the Travis Holmes was averaging about 10 per game but he has struggled of late. Chavis plays the point because they don't have a true point and they are subject to turn the ball over a lot! Remember the 30 to's vs HPU that I witnessed back in Jan. Dan Willis is still coaching too I believe and he is only 27. We have a chance to rattle the cages of the Keydets with a hostle crowd. I hope people still come out and support these guys....Thanks for the kind words about the job. The truth is God has been really good to me in my career since 2001. I have been getting nothing but contract work but it seems to come whenever I am looking (or in this case not really looking yet). I have gained a lot of valuable experience in a lot of different industries in their IT departments. I wanted to wait until after the season but I will just telecommute when I need to be in the Burg. So you may see me after all. I would like to meet the Family Foxes.

So are we gonna see any Keydets come down in their blue (or is it gray) trenchcoats? I saw one once at a football game a few years back so I figured they didn't travel very well. It sure would make it exciting if they did.

just so you know what we're dealing with, this is VMI:

VMI spokesman Stewart MacInnis said initial inquiries determined the new photos were not a result of hazing, but a common practice at VMI. The bound cadet was celebrating his 19th birthday, and the others that appear in the photographs are his friends, MacInnis said." (Associated Press, The Daily Progress, March 19, 2005)

Hey I had completely forgotten about this "indecent pictures" incident. I just did a google image search for VMI and these babies came up. I was just trying to remember what color their dress ups were.

but just for the record, the first picture was similar to an incident I encountered on my birthday at LU. Only I didn't have a chair. I was just taped up and thrown in the shower which sucked because I never really even wanted to touch that floor with anything but my feet.

On a side note for VMI: Gang showers? are they trying to promote homosexuality?

We used to have some VMI alumni and current keydets drop by the old site. I'd love to see them here on our new board.

yes you did. Because of my association with the Big South and Liberty I happen to feel that there are not that many guys out there that study and understand and have been around the Conference like I have other than Matt Hoague who is the PBP guy. But if they want to use an "outsider" I guess I will have to live with it. Kallander used to use my "inexperience on TV as a reason to not use me. Well I have 7 years of experience now including 3 with the Big South. So now what is the reason? The worse part about it is now that I have a regular gig with FTN, KK has taken the VMI game away from me. So not only is he not hiring me for his stuff, he comes in and steals one of my games and brings in an outside crew for the announcers but still uses EVERYONE ELSE on our crew! There are dozens of games on the schedule on the road that he can tab for Liberty's one Big South game. Why do a Liberty home game when we are already covering it? Yea, HMO, you picked up on a soft spot.

Good post Scar...it's irritating to see people with no real knowledge of the league getting analyst gigs on TV or season previews in magazines when there are qualified people around that would know what they are talking about...

All I expect tonight out of Ross is a Larry Blair and Reggie Williams love-fest...yes, those two deserve alot of air-time, but how hard is it to spotlight two guys that are averaging 20+ ppg. Tell me about Rell Porter's defense, tell me about the two teams' point guard troubles this season, tell me about Matt Murrer regaining his form after a terrible sophomore year...We won't get any of that tonight though...

WEF,

I am glad you understood what I was saying. I know I sound bitter as sentiment on a message board is difficult to convey (although the posters on the Fire Dunton Board have done a good job  ). When there are guys available with some insight and are capable of doing the job, and the game is in my home town for goodness sake, then why not use me? I don't really understand. I could see if I was like the boom goes the dynamite kid but I think I may be a little more competent than that. There are so many subplots that I would go into for tonight's game. I have seen VMI in person a lot and Jason Allison (assistant coach) played at LU when I was coaching. We talk all the time about his team and Liberty and the Big South back in the day and the current Big South. He and I exchanged our opinions last night about who we would pick for all conference at this stage and all rookie. I will post my thoughts on that topic later in the year. Anyway, I appreciate the support WEF and I will be back on the air on Monday night!
