The womens game is a completely different animal. the great things Green has done for our womens program will not carry over to the mens game. #lockthread.

Exactly. There have been a few coaches who have successfully transitioned from mens to womens. Our own fine assistant Alexis Sherrod is an example. Can you name anyone who has done the same from womens to mens? I can't think of one. It's really a different game.

A lot of it has to do with people perceiving Women's basketball as less then Men's basketball. It is not less it is different. The make up of the players are different. Personally knowing someone who has done both, it takes a different mental approach to coach either. I've known a ton of people who have tried to move to the Women's game only to crash and burn because they didn't have the mental make up to handle the players. One group responds to enthusiasm better then the other. One has a more ingrained basketball IQ then the other. One relies more on athleticism to cover up for a lack of fundamentals. It is difficult to change your own personality to fit the circumstances.
This is a topic I could go on all day on this, but not the Carey Green foolishness.

Why would Pat Summitt make a terrible mens coach? She does a pretty good job at being a man.

Coach Toman should coach the men! He's used to coaching guys! It's gotta be just as easy of a transition going from baseball to basketball....I mean they are both sports and all

His style of play would not fit men's game. Works well for women, but different game on men's side

The most hilarious part of this whole thread is that I know FF4E and he's actually coached both guys and girls basketball.

As crazy as it sounds to have a girl's coach start coaching guys, is it really that far fetched? Sure the game is different but that doesn't mean Green would have hard time transitioning. He has one of the highest winning percentages among NCAA Women's basketball coaches. I'd even argue that he's the most successful coach in LU history, concerning any sport. Additionally, he's one of the greatest at maximizing potential, which is what has been lacking with our men's team.

Rick Reeves thought he could do it, and after this season at G-W, he may have to!

No inside info here, but I think the main answer to the question "why not?" is simple. Cary Green loves coaching the LU WBB team and is well compensated for it and beloved on campus and in the community. I have never heard a single word from him or anyone else that would indicate he has any interest whatsoever in coaching men's basketball, at LU or anywhere else.

I think this moves into the number one spot for you in inane posts. DL did a great job with player development.

I have a feeling Carey Green would probably retire before potentially hurting his legacy moving to men's basketball. 12 championships in 14 seasons, the most 20 win seasons in school history, the only two NCAA tournament wins for basketball (men's or women's) in school history, I believe the second most wins at Liberty for all sports in school history...yeah...

BJ,

Now that is a good reason why not Carey Green for mens coach......The reason as you have pointed out.....is because Carey Green wouldnt want it....

And you're right !

It is hard to find NCAA DIv ! programs where the womens coach would not want the mens job.

That speaks volumes for our program....dont you think ?

Also, since you have replied to this thread.....is my thread now considered a sunstantive contribution?

This and other thoughts like it are insulting and far from logical. You all are acting like he's never coached men before. At the end of the day if you can teach you can coach. 99% of teachers at the high school/college level teach both boys/girls, men/women and most do it very well. To think that Green couldn't do the same in a sport he has mastered is borderline insane.

Yes, the men's game is "different" than the women's, but the required skill set needed to coach basketball is the same -

1. Run a proven system that works for your personnel
2. Teach the system and be a master teacher
3. Recruit talent to reload the system
4. Motivate/teach the intangibles as much as you can (heart, desire, etc)
5. Make great in game decisions
6. Guess well

You could argue that each of those 6 is a little bit different with men/women and I would agree, but to think that Green wouldn't have the ability to recognize that and cross over to the men's game is foolish at best. Coaches coach.
