If he has been signed then that's a big pick up. But I find it hard to believe because he originally said he was going to commit somewhere this past summer but later decided to see how the season played out. Before the season he was looking at schools like Liberty, Gardner-Webb, VCU, etc. now he's being recruited by Oregon, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and Wichita State. I'd bet he ends up signing with Maryland though, he just visited there a couple of weeks ago. He also has a cousin that plays for Delaware and there's been some talk of him going there.

The kid verballed last night and his stock rose considerably this season primarily as a marksman. He has 16 pts & 8 assists in his game this evening.

Marshall fit to succeed at Monroe

Davon Marshall has always had the shooting ability to play scholarship basketball. After two seasons at Monroe College in the Bronx — and a busy offseason back home in Niagara Falls — the former first team all-state guard appears as if he now also has the strength and skill set to do so.

“He’s answered every challenge,” Monroe coach Jeff Brustad said by phone recently. “He walked on last year and is on scholarship this year. He’s earned everything. I’m excited for him.”

After a solid freshman season in which he averaged 11.7 points per game and helped the Mustangs to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, Marshall could have easily been satisfied. Instead, he went to work on his game — and body.

Just a couple of weeks back it seemed many in this forum were fretting over where the scoring will come next season. I think we are seeing the answers to those questions.

This kid shoots nearly 50% from behind the arc and 97% from the line. He will force defenses to extend themselves which will open up opportunities for everyone else.

Based on numbers alone, we're bringing in the best pure shooter in the JUCO ranks.

So if he is combo guard, do we need him more at the point or the 2? At 5'10", I'm guessing it's the point.

Here is who I have as commits for Liberty?

Larry Taylor, 5’10, PG, Englewood, FL (Northport) 2-Star Recruit
Chad Donley, 6’2, PG, Baker, FL (Northwest Florida State College/JUCO)
Juan Coronado, 6’8, PF, Palm Beach, FL (Palm Beach State/JUCO)
Emmanuel Anderson, 5’11, SG, Shelbyville, TN (Cape Fear Community College/JUCO)
Davon Marshall, 5'11, PG, Niagara Falls, NY (Monroe College/JUCO)

I'm just curious, why all the JUCO kids? Is it a last ditch effort by Layer? It'll be interesting to see how all the guys will gel b/c I would expect them to get pretty solid playing time right off the back. It could be a rough opening month or so, but I'm sure everyone can come together by the time conference play starts. I think this summer is going to be a very important period for Liberty, all these guys need to get into the gym together.

We're going to have 9 of 13 scholarship players as upperclassmen. How is that a young team? Not to mention 2 Sophomores who will be in the program for their 3rd year.

I've always been against bringing in a lot of JUCOs. One is ok, but a lot is not a good way to build a program in my opinion. However, we just seem to be hemorrhaging players every year. Maybe this is a good short term solution? Get us competative quickly so we can pick up some quality high schoolers? I don't know.

If we can only keep players here for 2 years, may as well be their JR & SR years right?

Even the majors have had to change their thought process on JUCOs. If you look at rosters of the Top-25 programs you'll see much more of an emphasis on JUCOs as high schoolers are spending less time on campus as players.

If we are just plugging holes for another year with JUCOs, then I don't such much value. But the majority of these guys will be our starting lineup next year. And as we try to impress potential FBS leagues, getting our hoops back on track in a hurry has legitimate value for the entire athletic department.

You can't look at just one year. With Coronado coming in, next year's team may actually be the biggest we have ever had. We have 5 bigs who are underclassmen this year, plus Burrus. IMHO, what we will be lacking are swing players. I can only surmise that Layer feels Smith, Baird and Gielo are skilled and athletic enough to play that role, and Speaks can give us minutes at the 3 if he wants to go small.

As far as any thoughts that these guards we have recruited are too small are concerned, is there anyone here who would not want Saah Nimley if we could sign him now? He makes these guys look like giants.

Yeah so put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

Ha. Actually we will have a big hole to fill at PG next year, and I'm not sure the 'other' Saunders is the answer to our scoring woes.

Haize, you need to turn off auto complete... just saying.

Abigail is a player whose contributions to this years team don't show up in the scorebook. :D
