Yea, diehard Flame Fan here: even though I have season tickets, I'm still dropping an extra 10 spot for this "home" game. I just hope the concession stands are open, or I'm heading to the Cavalier at halftime.

Liberty loses 81-76
The did not hear or watch this game but if we can get a decent defensive effort I think our offense is good enough to win some games. Last year it was our defense that helped us win more games then we should of, this year its our defense that is preventing us from winning more games.
John Brown sure would help a lot of our problems that is fore sure...and no, not an excuse, just the reality

just got home from the game and i totally agree with you postie. If we could play better defense we could win some games. The losses of JB and Sommy are huge obviously. With those guys we would have won this game today. I still feel like JC is a big time liability defensively, and im still trying to figure out what value guys like Cheyne and JVP give our team. I do love the never quit attitude of this team and the coaching staff.

If the you were coaching and 2-15 in last 17 D1 games and 0-7 in last 7 BSC games you better appear to be battling at least.

Do you watch the games??
I'm sorry if any team lost one of their main contributors on the glass and on the defensive end for the season things would not be going as well as anybody wants.
I realize at this point you're simply just trolling and sitting back and laughing, but the thing is I know you truly believe the crap you spew which is simply sad
I know I know...not a good excuse we should have the depth...but certain things you can not replace and all teams have players like that.

Which is what they are doing. Glad to see you think Layer is doing a good job. Because he is.

I don't want to ever call out anyone personally on the board, so I'll just leave that Chene and JVP simply need to pick up their game.
Aside, it's frustrating. But I still like Layer. I'm not ready to blame this all on him. But of course, when certain people only post on FF every time just to bash our athletics as a whole, then you really need to get a life.

I'd like to see us actually LOOK into the post. Granted our bigs need to learn to put the biscuit in the basket, but if they don't get the chance in the game then it's tough to improve.
I want to see more Geilo but I guess his practice habits aren't the best.

i dont think you can say he's doing a great job, it's just been mediocore, which is what his resume indicated when we hired him. Granted, he walked into a tough spot and has been dealt a tough hand with injuries but thats college basketball. People come and go in that sport at a ridiculous clip, just see how many guys uva has lost since Tony Bennett took over (6 and counting in 3 years). Theres about 3 guys playing good ball (Jesse, Speaks, Burrus). That's just not enough to get it done and you guys are spot on about JVP and Phillips. Atleast JVP has had a few good games and shown some flashes, i have not seen anythign to suggest Chene will ever contribute much. We dont play much defense and we have no 3 pt shooting, hard to win with that formula. I was thinking we were showing improvement against hampton but were right back to where we were.

First game I took in in person this year. (Work has kept me from attending any so far).
Thoughts.
1. Our guards lack vision. Jesse may have the worst Vision to Assist ratio ever. Yes, he can facilitate the offense, but on his own terms. The ball is never fed into the post. I watched Twan, Dave, Joel, Tomasz, and Andrew Smith all get incredible post position (One play in particular in the first half, where Minaya had fought his man under the basket and out of bounds, and Minaya could have had a mini-dunk contest he was so open). I think they got the ball in good position once, if at all (Jesse lobbed one from half court to Antwan who had beat his man down the floor, but it was an overthrow.)
I watched time after time, where our guard would look at their man and look around the three point line, rather than seeing the post player ready to score.
2. Joel is actually really, really good at getting position. And nailed all of his free throws. Not sure what he needed to do better, besides grabbing a couple rebounds that bounced away from him? But I watched him seal his man behind him and put his already 6 and a half feet in the air arm up to where a lob pass would have been catchable by no one but him, and an easy layup/dunk would have been the result. He drew charges, grabbed some rebounds, got good position...
3. I really don't see a capable 2 guard on this team (from the 3 we typically play when we don't go big and move Tavares into that position, which is JC, Ethan, and Chene). John Caleb is a terrible passer, a mediocre shooter (Based on reputation... his numbers this year have been bad. He has only broken 40% from 3 twice, both at home against Sub DI... he's actually gone 0-for-three the same amount of times (four) than he has broken 30% from three against DI opponents), and can get some space creating for himself, but he can't make runners or layups with consistency, and struggles with ball security on the dribble. And on defense, he has slightly above average hands, but terribly slow feet and below average awareness. Multiple times in the game (and in the past), even his teammates recognized it, as Joel and Jesse were able to get into position for charges, knowing that JCS was about to give up a dribble drive.
4. The zone defense made little sense to me today. We were basically handing them corner 3's, which they happily accepted. And we were allowing offensive rebounds because no one had a man to box out, so on attempted 3's, CSU was cutting through the zone to grab the rebounds.
---
I like Andrew Smith. Looks like he could really be a player for us once he gets into the right mentality.
I wish Minaya had another year (or more) of eligibility.
I hope when we bring in Coronado (spelling error, I'm sure) that we feed the post.
We really need a new Seth Curry or Evan Gordon at the 2. Hopefully one of the kids we're bringing in can be that guy.
