Conference Play

What should we expect this year after all the injuries?

After seeing the other BS teams beat very legitimate teams from higher conferences, I am very very worried about our conference play. Keeping the Campbell and Coastal games under 15 point losses would actually be a good thing.

There is no question that injuries have greatly reduced expectations. But I haven't given up on the squad we have together putting things together. This feels a bit like last year at this time.

I was going to argue that we haven't been blown out in any losses to teams on our level.

And then we got killed by Georgia State.

I was really hoping I'd have something to look forward to this winter.

The lack of depth is very concerning. With the injuries I would have expected more guys getting more time/experience now during the non-conference schedule. I just don't see anybody different stepping up except for Tavares and earning the playing time.

Speaks is the real deal. He is so talented. But he can't pull the weight alone.

Coastal, UNCA, Presby are the top 3, IMO.
It looks like Campbell could be right there with them.
I can never count out WU from finishing top 5.
Then there’s VMI, who has the talent to contend for a conference title.
That’s 6 teams right there I don’t see us touching, unless something drastic happens.
So, I guess we’re in the mix with High Point, CSU, GW, and Radford.

Manson I'm with you on your assessment of the conference. Although some say Campbell may be the most talented team in the league. They are explosive with 3 guys avg more than 15 per game. The win up at Iowa was solid! They shot 62% for the game. They have a ton of weapons due to some key transfers.

This could be a long year for us all I fear. I hope they figure out their formula for success but losing Brown, Gordon and Ogukwe is a lot for any team to try to overcome.

I agree that the losses are devastating for a very young squad.

Here is a point to remember... Last year's team was VERY young as well. I had the privilege to watch last year's LU squad on numerous occasions and I was very impressed with their overall team defense and team chemistry. LU did not have a dynamic scorer. They are missing the Kyle Ohman or... dare I say... Curry. I hope that Layer is able to begin building a solid foundation. Basketball is one sport that we, as fans of a team in the BSC, can be proud of. The competition is very good and I will enjoy watching a young Liberty squad be beaten up a little bit because I know in the end it will LU stronger.

Patience.

Go Flames!

Sucks for possibly our best point guard ever. His final 3 and a half years have been a mess.

This is what I've been saying for a while. If Jesse wasn't on the team I wouldn't even go to the games.

How is Campbell? Do they run and gun like VMI? When I heard the score of the game last night I didn't know if it was bad D or they do a better job of running VMI's offense than VMI does.

After an extended December siesta to use up all of my vacation and furlough days, we’re back on the blog for some basketball and football talk. Let’s start with hoops first, as it’s a bit fresher in the way of actual news. I’ll split this into separate posts, with the football one coming a little later today.

Is Sommy better than Burrus or JVP?

Defensively, yes.

Offensively, no. Especially not better than Burrus, who is really starting to assert himself in the post. Everything is clicking for Burrus now offensively. I don't expect that to change.
