Televised games

I am interested on getting some feedback on the production quality of our FSN games from some of the most faithful Liberty fans out there....meaning FLAMEFANS. I would like to know how well you think the game is covered, graphics, commercials, half time analysis, announcers and overall look. Our team is constantly trying to make our broadcasts the best possible and with our extended coverage this year on CTN, ESPN3, ESPN Fullcourt and Gameplan, along with MASN I believe we are reaching our goal. I appreciate your comments, and please.....serious comments only.

I have seen quite a few games over the last few seasons:
the crew (Jones/Scarborough) is second to none. Good rapport, smooth call and color, and very little "homer" attitude, in my opinion. These guys need to do away games too. First Rate.
camera angles are good, replays good, stats... eh. I've seen at least one broadcast where they were flat out wrong, but that may be for a variety of reasons.
When I started following Flames sports, I was surprised at how decent the graphics are- there is room for improvement, but at this level of athletics; not bad.
halftime shows- dont know; I dont watch them, as a rule.
commercials: if we had more than 3 in the rotation, that would be nice. Trey has lost his appeal to me...
very happy to have the games on ESPN 3 this season- video quality seems a TON better. (Not sure why it is crappy on the Liberty channel) Big South Edge: FORGET IT. CRAP.
hope that helps

old school, i generally like the broadcasts that i watch. SCAR and Ray do an excellent job. i think the on air graphics have improved as well, but could be better. i do think there could be upgrades in the halftime show. Lindsey just so does come across as really knowing sports. im not saying you have to be an X's and O's genius, but some of her commentary to hildo and coach manley sometimes baffles me. that happened during football as well. i cannot cite certain examples but that is just my opinion. commercials? as medic wrote. a bigger circualtion of commercials would be great, but that is the least of my concerns. overall a very good job.

-Coverage has been A LOT better this year. I love the amount of ESPN3 games we've had this year.
-The graphics are reallllly outdated, and are definitely in need of a major upgrade!!
-Announcers --Thumbs up (I love me some SCAR).
-Half time analysis could be improved as well.

One of my biggest problems during basketball season has been Coach Manley. He's very knowledgeable but usually speaks very biased. He calls our guys "Jesse" and "Evan" instead of the more unbiased "Sanders" and "Gordon." He always says that "we" need to do things. I heard him start to correct himself on that at the end of the season which is a move in the right direction. I know we try to be unbiased so that's what made me think of that.
Other than that, updating the graphics is the only other thing I'd say to do. I've loved the post-game segment for LibertyFlames.com that you guys have been doing this year. That's been really, really cool.

I agree with SJ on Manley being very biased in how he speaks.
The only other thing is the commercials. They are weak, and its the same 3 every break. Sometimes you get the same one back to back.

Coach Manley is cool.
I wouldn't like his approach if he were doing in-game commentary like SCAR does, but I kindof like it at halftime. It's a broadcast of
Liberty Flames basketball. I don't think total objectivity is needed at half time. Hildo is knowledgible, but seems uncomfortable in front of the camera to me. Lindsey comes across as scripted, and unfortunately, I think she is writing the script.
Ray and SCAR are IMHO head and shoulders above most mid-major broadcast teams and better than a lot who do high major games.

First off, I can't tell you guys how proud I am that we have a school that places an emphasis on our television broadcasts. We are the envy of much higher profile schools across the country with our FSN product. Old School & Co. do an outstanding job.
When the game is moving we have a great team in place from a production and talent perspective (kudos to Ray for really picking up his game this season). I know I am biased, but I personally believe we are lucky to have Scar doing our games because he is better than half the guys I see on regional networks across the country.
As for areas of improvement, the only thing really needing a significant upgrade is the halftime show. The current setup simply isn't clicking. I wish I could work all three of the talent some time. Hildo & Coach Manley have good content but just need to some polish & understanding of what works best on television. It would probably help quite a bit to have some cover b-roll for the long interviews. Perhaps Hildo & Coach Manley could you guys a heads up on one topic they each will be working ... perhaps a player or series of plays that were crucial in first half so you could cut a couple short VOs. It'd be awesome if you had some packages to toss to but I understand those challenges as well.
Easy on the HD requests ... that's talking about a considerable upgrade in cost. I'd rather they continue to use any budget increases for more road games like the VMI telecasts.

I like the halftime shows like last nights better anyways. Take a person and interview them, then show it for halftime.
Also, more score updates from conference games. I hate having to keep check ESPN.com

I like it, but the commerials need to be different, not the same ones. Also, Please correct Joel Vander Pol's hometown, it's not spelled Fort Meyers
SCAR and Ray are great on the call and do a very professional job.

if lindsey is writing her own scripts, maybe have someone else do it?? what about paul nazigan if hildo seems uncomfortable. totally agreed on ray and SCAR being better than most other regional telecasts. those MASN guys like craig esherick are horrible.

Upgrade on the graphics (overlays, swipes, etc...) a more "polished" look.
Please don't play the "it's slammin'..it's jammin'" commercial with all of the clip art spinning around.
I really like the broadcast team.
Camera angles are fine.

It's a great production. I think a lot of the the things like commercials might be out of your hands so I cant fault you for that. Scar and Ray do a great job and the production quality of camera work is great. I think the graphics are a little on the week side but that doesnt matter.
Edit: Bl was posting as I was....didnt intend to echo anything others were saying.

Excellent. Ray and Scar are top notch play by play/commentator combination. They remain quite neutral throughout the game unlike other play by play announcers in our conference. Our radio team for men is also top notch.

Agreed with everything said so far. Somebody needs to slam SCAR though before his head gets any bigger...
For a mid-major team, our broadcasts - and the availability of broadcasts have been excellent. I don't think I've missed a home game with DirecTV.
If I had to critique anything, and this is a stretch, I'm ready for some HD feeds. The SD feed is sometimes difficult to watch on a big screen.

I would personally sacrifice the home HD for more broadcasted away games. But if VMI and Radford is all there will be, then I'm ready for HD.
Also, I'd much rather the Football games be broadcasted in HD before the Basketball.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I agree that our announce team does a great job. Coach Manley was told to be pro active for Liberty since this is a Liberty Broadcast and not necessarily trying to highlight other teams on our broadcasts. Graphics are being rebuilt for next season and will look much more polished. Working on changes for our half time and may even do the same as the men with the women's broadcast next season. Occasionally we will show special features like the Tolsma feature shown at VMI during half time. HD is way in the future for now but expansion of away games is looking more like a reality with the help and vision of our Chancellor. Thanks again and GO FLAMES...

I'm just happy to be able to see so many LU games, football or basketball on MASN. I don't have any complaints. I lived in TN, and now GA, and having the chance to see 5 or 6 football games and 10 basketball games a year is great. I get a chance to see more LU games than most other bigger FBS programs. That is outstanding given LU plays FCS football. I don't mind the homer aspect of broadcasts either. If LU is producing the games then you should expect that. Its no different than Sonny and Sam being Skins homers on the radio. It happens everywhere. Keep up the great work, and whatever improvements you make will be icing on the cake.

Loving having away games televised. One of the things that is very small but I'm noticing right now in the PC game is that on the score line, PC is in red and we're in blue while we're wearing red uniforms and their colors are mainly blue. It's a little bit confusing at times.

The audio feed married with the video feed seems almost perfect. If you didn't know it was a radio broadcast you would have never guessed. Hopefully we can have more road games done this way. I absolutely love it!
