Tomasz Gielo – 2m04 – F – 1993 – Trojka Kos Szczecin
If there would have been a Sixth-Man-Award, Tomasz Gielo would have been among the favorites for sure. The athletic forward is most likely the player that showed the most progress since last summer in the Polish team. The left handed Power Forward runs the floor very well and is really present on both ends of the floor. He is not afraid to go for the tough dunk even against bigger players than himself.
Offensively, Gielo showed good improvement on the drive where he is now able to beat his defender with his left hand. His right hand still needs some additional development as he barely uses it at the moment. His jump shot goes out until the three point line from where he can hit the occasional one, especially from the corner. His future should be on the SF position as he has the necessary athletic abilities and the handles to become an interesting player. On defense, Gielo is a nice shot blocker but needs to improve his individual and team defense as he lacks probably the necessary concentration over the full game. However, he remains one of the most interesting players for the future of the whole Polish team.
Interesting that he's interested in Iona and Liberty... hopefully we win and convince him we're the right choice.

If we sign him I don't think Carter will be on the depth chart for our team.

Regardless of who we sign, don't see Carter on the depth chart for our team. Will be hard for him to transfer, already using up a redshirt year, but I can't see him sticking around.

Carter is on pace to graduate in May. If he does he can transfer to a school without using a year of eligibility if they have a graduate program that we don't offer.

I really can't judge, not having seen any of them play, but if we sign this kid along with Smith and Baird, "on paper" it looks like we will have 3 very similar new players starting out next year. Having said that, if you are going to have 3 players that are a lot alike, 6'8"-6'9", athletic and skilled is a good kind to have.

That is almost too much to hope for given our recent past. What a turn around in terms of personnel! I think we could find some PT for all these guys eventually.

I would also think either Smith or this kid would redshirt.

Agree. And it sounds like this kid could use a redshirt year to work on his game.

he's probably been prep he's whole life in bball like most european basketball players
played against the best of the world (18 under) in the FIBA games. I think it would give him the edge but it would depend what Layer wants him to be. SF or PF. could redshirt if put in PF to gain weight but i think he would be too highly skill to redshirt.
I'll be surprised if either are redshirted. Non-medical redshirts are just not done that often. JVP was the first one we had in years. If you burn a year on a voluntary and then later the kid has an injury, you lose a year on the court.

They heard he committed to us
While we heard a few weeks ago already that Tomasz Gielo has decided to play for the small school of Liberty, this information did not get confirmed yet though
BuryYourDuke wrote:Even if he commits getting him past the clearing house will probably be a nightmare...still, great pickup.
The clearinghouse has been a nightmare for Nigerian recruits. Not so much for Euros as long as they haven't gotten excessive compensation from a club team.
