A Sea Of Red

With the men’s bball program I feel like I went through a terrible breakup in the spring of 2009. I had jumped on the McKay and guy who should never be mentioned here’s bandwagon big time. It looked like LU basketball was about to be put on the map and be a national player. Then it happened.

I took it very hard and I don’t think I’ve given this program its proper attention and fandom over the past year plus. I think I’ve been pretty negative as well. Well, I think I’m finally over the breakup.

I like what I see from Layer so far, and I think within time he will have us competing for the conference championship. Maybe as soon as this year. And I don’t want to miss a second of it.

I’m back on board.

No mention of Curry. It's not hard for me to see McKay sitting on the bench as a UVa assistant coach, but it still hurts a little to see Seth wearing a Duke uniform and scoring 14-17 points for the Blue Devils, when he could have been scoring 24-27 points for us for 3 years.

There IS reason to be optimistic

Yeah I watched Sportscenter this morning for 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes, the Duke hilight was included. baby Judas and his father were both mentioned and shown. Even a Liberty shout out. Didn't bother me too much.

I still hate what happened. But I'm enjoying the development of the relationship with the new girl more.

I think if we give it 2 years and a couple more good recruiting classes we will have as good a TEAM as LU has ever had. I am behind Coach 100%. I like what I see in terms of effort and intensity on the court and the recruiting off it. Looks as though spots in the 2011 class are pretty much full but I will be watching 2012 recruiting with great interest.

As for two years ago: I am over it and wish everyone the best. We have had more than one great shooter come through LU in the past and there will be more than one in the future.

Not as far back as the transition after Coach Meyer. We went backwards for awhile. This is more like a small trip. Remember we didn't win any conference championships two years ago. We just had a lot of press and hype and a guy who hit some big shots and took 25 a game. Let's not revise history here. I loved the early part of that season but by the end we were not getting any better. I think we are in much better hands and even though it might take another year I can see where we could compete for conference championships soon. These are guys I can get behind. I think several have big up sides and I think from here out the guys we do lose will be replaced by players who have greater upside potential.

I hate having this conversation repeatedly, but McKay only left because HWDNMH left. That was his only plan as far as "building" us went. He figured he could ride that train for 2-3 years and then jump to a bigger gig or we would become that bigger gig. When his plan left, he knew he would be facing a long-term rebuilding effort. Which is something he doesn't do.

I will never forget hearing the unimaginable news...ok so it wasn't that bad...but I was at basic training and my wife would send me letters with news clippings...so i would know what was going on mainly in sports...

one day i open the envelope with the clipping announcing the departure of both mckay and seth...my wife said in the letter included with this news clipping that she thought about not sending it because she knew how upset i was....i set next to my wall locker and the guy next to me thought someone had died...i kind of felt dumb telling him what i was upset about...

i, for come reason, watched the duke game last night for a bit....that same sick feeling game back.....I am not over it, but have always and will always support LU basketball and nothing could ever change that

Getting rid of Mckay is good for the program no matter how tough it was and how far it set us back. I dont want a snake like that leading the basketball program of my school if he's going to throw down his clipboard and quit at the first sign of trouble (seth transferring). There's no way to cut it but the whole year of Seth probably hurt us more than it helped. Sure it was nice having a good year but we ended up losing him and look 2 years later were still a ridiculousy young team that is freshman laden. We have been one of the youngest teams in the nation for 3 years running because of that whole turmoil. The only good thing attributed to Mckay is that we got Jesse out of the deal. Everyone else he brought in is long gone already other than Carter.

I don't think you're ever over a terrible break up until you find the next person worth falling for. Yeah, it still bugs you to see the ex with someone new, but you see the potential with the new person and it's exciting.

That's how Layer is to me.

It still bugs me seeing Seth at Duke. He was a great kid that would've been great for our program and for our school. He would've represented our school really well. With that being said, I think Coach Layer is going to do a very good job here in time. We see flashes of what could be right now. We're not there yet, and we may not be that close, but we're moving in the right direction and there are positives. After getting to travel with the team to a game last year, I'm completely sold out to everything Dale Layer does. He's great on the floor and off. He's a great teacher, motivator, coach, and Christian.

The break up sucked and we experienced some terrible things out of it. Ultimately, I think we're better off for it and we're going to be able to enjoy even better things in the future.

(It's sad how much that sounded like my actual life. Gross.)

huh. I always thought you were a recent grad. I'm not sure why though.

I am still not over the jerks. My roommate was watching the Duke game the other day, I walked into the room and almost hit him in the mouth. The first thing he said to me was, "look #30 is playing."

My senior pastor actually asked me about Seth and how the whole thing went down at lunch today. I had to explain to him and another one of our pastors what happened and how it went down. When I said it was dirty, he told me I was a homer.

He's probably right.

It may not have been dirty, but there are a lot of negative words that can be used to describe it.

I will never understand why Seth decided to do what he did, he would've had a much larger legacy had he been the cornerstone of building a great program at "little Liberty"...now he is just another good player for Duke...but he is also playing for one of the best coaches in history, can't say he had that pleasure at LU...

I say all that to say I may not like that he left, but when you are at the level we are that it is almost to be expected...but McKay leaving will always anger me...he used the God card to escape what was quickly turning into a much tougher situation then he imagined...there are a lot of words that can describe that, but I have a feeling Sly would not be happy with my use of words so I will leave it at that...

That opinion is shared by many throughout the LU community.

Seth does hurt me the most.....I understand what your saying about him being just another good Duke player, but he's just another good Duke player right now as a Sophomore....by a Sr he's sitting pretty.


Sadly, I do think it was a good move. If he wasnt getting any PT or showed signs of being Marcus Vick then I guess it wouldnt hurt quite so bad.

Yeah, that's it, and our AD is also responsible for the gulf oil leak and the earthquake in Haiti.
