It certainly appears that Layer is focusing on the point guard position for that last scholarship. I'm wondering what kind of competition this kid played against. With his numbers and grades, you would think there would be more interest in him.

Well, we don't have another true PG on the roster other than Jesse, and he is a Jr.

Yeah JC and Evan are both more of a 2. Of course either one of them could play the 1 if needed.

So again, I love the positional depth Layer is trying to build. That is huge IMO.
Kids a stud...BC ended up calling to see if he's going to sign with them....they called a little to late

Michigan reportedly had a type of deal similar to what VT tried to offer Seth coming out of high school ... pay your own way for a year and we'll hook you up with a scholarship for the next three years. The fact Big 10 & ACC schools were making a late run at this kid tells me he really had a monster senior season making him a hot commodity.
Guys, this class has MAJOR potential to take this program to heights we haven't seen before on the mountain. Of course, we all know potential guarantees nothing. But I'd much rather have a holster full of potential than duds heading to the OK Corral. OK, sorry for the cowboy reference.

It just occurred to me that we may have been going head up with Jeff Meyer in recruiting Chene. I agree with you on this class Sly. I think we are all just a bit hesitant to hype a recruiting class right now after what happened with the 08 class. Not that 08 was a total loss. We still have a teriffic PG and leader in Jesse, and I may be in the minority, but I still believe Carter has a lot of upside.

I'm sitting right there in that minority with you. If the flashes we saw from Carter last season can start being strung together it changes the complexion of our frontcourt completely.
Incidentally, our new point's name is pronounced 'Shane' for those guessing.

I'm trying hard not to get caught in the Carter-hype. I was a big Russell fan and defended him up until his senior year -- and we all know how well that turned out.

Comparisons between Russ and Carter are somewhat natural, but not necessarily fair. I think there is a substantial difference in talent/skill level.

Carter is far more aggressive and athletic than Russ.
This Phillips kid will be huge.

And Russ weighed 250 more pounds - just saying...

His Senior year, Russ was listed at 235. Who cares. It didn't make him a ball player. Carter is 210. He has 3 more years to develop., and I think he has the talent to be really good. Personally, all I care about is that he improves. It's possible that gaining some weight may be a part of that process, but I'm not holding my breath on that. There are a lot of other ways a player can improve. I doubt Carter is at risk of eating his way out of an NBA career like Aluma did, but Peter is living proof that gaining weight is not always a good thing.

I never once saw Russ as agressive and instinctive to block shots like Carter lat in the year.

That's because he was never on the court.

That's pretty much true, but 2 different coaches apparently didn't think he deserved to be. It's not that he wasn't given a chance. RD started Russ from day 1 as a Freshman and over a 4 year career he worked his way down the ladder to the end of the bench. As a Senior RMK desperatly needed help off the bench, but he sat Russ and played a 7 man rotation because he hurt us when he was in there. Too many fouls and turnovers and not enough points or rebounds.
Well, we've really taken this thread about Chene Phillips of topic, haven't we. I think I'll stop now.
