From Chris' Notebook ...
newsadvance.com wrote:Layer said the 2010-11 schedule is about “95 percent done,” but he’s waiting on several contracts to come in so he can finalize it.

The highlights next season are home games with CAA teams William & Mary and George Mason. The Flames will travel to UNC Wilmington and participate in the South Padre Island Invitational in Texas.

The South Padre tournament is similar to the multi-team events the Flames participated in the last two seasons in Chicago and Las Vegas. Liberty will open with games at Texas Tech and at South Florida before convening in Texas with three other teams to be determined for the final two games on Thanksgiving weekend.

Layer said he expects there to be three non-Division I home games on schedule, down from four last year.

I'm loving the in-state CAA home dates and of course the trips down here to Texas. Of course, the only Division I venue that could possibly have been farther from Houston in the Lone Star State than Tech & South Padre would be UTEP. It looks like we'll be headed to the Rio Grande Valley after dining on turkey. Not sure I can swing a trip to Lubbock the same week.

You would think this would be right up the alley of SumItUp and yours truly but it is a long way to each for both of us. In fact, I wonder if a game at the Vines Center would almost be closer for SumItUp than South Padre?

In any event, I am stoked to have a driving distance couple of games on the schedule for us as well as the Sanders & Baird families.

As soon as I read about the South Padre tournament, I thought to myself, "Sly & the Saunders family must be dancing in the street."

It is probably about the same drive for the Baird family as well from NW San Antonio.

We have family in the Valley that we try to visit at least once or twice a year. We had planned a trip possibly next month but I may postpone that one. We'll have to make sure those aunts & uncles & cousins aren't all heading somewhere for that holiday weekend.

Lurking around I have been trying to figure out who some of the other schools in the tourney might be. The only one I have discovered online is LUFFG's employer.

Liking the series between us and the CAA schools, loving the tournaments and the decrease in non-DIs.

I know I've heard G-W is playing at Florida State. I know we have the return game at Elon from the bracketbusters last February, along with some tourney at William & Mary where we play two games, one against them and one against Niagra I believe.

I'm with you guys, the fewer non D-1 games the better.

From what I have gathered so far, VMI will play West Virginia (in Charleston), at Wake F., at VCU. And, host Richmond, UNC-W, and Jacksonville St.

Latest on G-W slate FYI...

confirmed:

at Oklahoma
at Florida State
at Louisville
at Arizona State

all at about an $85K payout for each game, a nice $340K or so boost for our general fund....

other games at Elon, and the two games at W&M in that tourney...

I've also heard rumor that Appy State is really trying to fill out their schedule at this point, and that Scruggs is in charge of that effort......I wonder if all the ill-will can be put aside for what would be a dandy home/home series to have in western NC?

also, FYI, our women, in addition to hosting both UNC and Purdue at Porter Arena this fall (the home games of a 3 away/1 home series with both that will continue through the 2012-13 season), will be going out to Norman to play the Sooners as well, and will get around $13K or so for that.

Not me...I got punched in the ribs and had the subs try to fight me the last time the last I played there. I will never cheer for GW even though they are in the BA and I had a good friend of mine play there.

Yeah the GW schedule is paying off Scruggs, unless Burch had a savy contract agreement where he doesn't have to pay off Scruggs if he takes another job. GW hoops is the total fundraiser for that athletic Department.

I need to take a refresher english course. I hope I fixed my post so that it makes sense.

I didn't know those punches to the old ribcage made you lapse in basic Comp 101 ability. :P (BTW, your first post was understandable....talking spelling or English smack on boards is weak).

It was a flat $100K buyout from what I have heard. G-W's paydays in athletics, no matter what sport, go directly into the general fund of the school. Scruggs' buyout came directly from that fund as opposed to directly from the athletic department budget.

I was just working on my scheduling and it looks like I will be working at the South Padre Island tourney. I am anxious to see who the other teams turn out to be.
