To see who we are recruiting, check out any thread that has "2010 recruit" in the title or the "Spring signing period" thread (although based on last year, Layer is likely to sign someone who is totally off of our radar screen.) The names of the players who are leaving should be announced soon.

I have no idea who they are referring to. We had at least one recruit on campus. He's 6'5 and his name is John Brown. Doesn't sound Nigerian to me. There's an exception to every rule, but based on what I've seen from players who come from the Nigerian club system, if they are under 6'9" I wouldn't get too excited about it. If they are smaller and played HS ball in the states they might be good.
Steven Baird signed in November. There is some concern that he didn't play HS ball this year, but I haven't heard a word to indicate he won't be playing for Liberty in the fall. Hopefully he will be in town knocking off the rust by working out with the guys this summer.

I wonder when the news will break on who those three are. I guess those on the outside will have to wait for an official announcement from Liberty.

I will be very concerned if we lose underclassmen with significant playing team such as Konan, Sanders, or Burris. On the other hand if we lose some of the "deadwood" no big deal and life goes on. Hard to improve a program year to year if you lose key players every year (Seth Curry for example). I guess our "revolving door" reputation is back ounce again.

I don't have inside info on the guys leaving, but I can assure you that we will have two Sanders brothers playing next year barring a shocking turn of events. And Baird is jazzed about being a Flame.

The scribe can only be in so many places at once.

I know that...I just figured you get to talk to Coach Layer and the boys in the bb office more than any of us do so I figured you might know a little more about this than our friend EastRA or something

I haven't spoken to Layer since the end of hoops season. I wish I had the luxury of only covering hoops or only covering football, but a lot of the offseason stuff gets lost in the shuffle because we have to switch beats right at the end of a season. Such is the life on a three-writer staff.
I'd be a little more concerned about potential transfers if their names were Gordon or Sanders. But they're not.

Is that 3
choosing to leave? I was aware of 2 who have decided to transfer and at least one who is not being retained. Possibly 2. Based on playing time and production, we won't miss the player(s) Layer is cutting. The 2 I have heard are transferring out were significant contributors, but with the addition of JC, Laird and Joel, were likely to have a somewhat reduced role next year.

Is it a secret? - I have heard who from many sources - none even being associated with the school.
Perez, Stephene and Konan.

A lot of people certainly knew. (I guess a lot more know now

) I think there was just a hesitancy to be the first to say it in a public forum. If noone had said anything by the start of the Spring signing period Wednesday I was going to post it.
Perez and Konan basically just decided they would rather be somewhere else. I think the rules at LU were a big part of it. I also think, considering where both of them come from (Ivory Coast and DR by way of Florida) the winter we just had may also have been a factor. I will be shocked if either of them end up North of the Mason-Dixon line. People will say it wasn't a consideration, but I think you have to add to that the fact that even without looking at possible Spring recruits, just the addition of VanderPol, JC Sanders and Baird was likely to cut into their minutes.
My understanding is that Stephene's scholarship was not being renewed regardless, although it may end up being announced that he is also deciding to transfer. Quite frankly, Johnny is a mystery. He clearly has considerable talent, but for whatever reason, he has not done what was needed to give either Layer or McKay before him the confidence to put him on the floor. The handwriting has been on the wall for a long time.
Someone posted on ff that Minaya has been saying openly that his scholarship is being pulled as well. I'm thinking that may change with Perez and Konan gone.

I had heard Konan's name being floated around, and Perez doesn't surprise me at all seeing as he just won't fit prominently anywhere in the guard mix with what Liberty has coming back and coming in. Stephene, as you so nicely put it oldflame, is a total mystery. It appears the only asset he brings to the floor is his ability to run baseline to baseline really fast. He doesn't shoot, doesn't handle it particularly well in traffic, doesn't defend great. Just doesn't look real confident out there. Physically, he looks like he should be a player. But I suppose three years of being buried on the bench will kill any player's confidence.
No offense to any of these guys, but they're very replaceable. These weren't foundation pieces like Sanders and Gordon.
