Adios Rick Scruggs

You guys can move this but I thought I could start it here, G-W fired Scruggs late this afternoon....no details available yet, just your standard statement on the www.gwusports.com website.

I have wanted this to happen since the whole NCAA probation/grade fiasco back in the early '00's. I'll be very intrigued to see who they bring in.

I wonder how many campus cops had to escort him out of there, being his temper has always got the best of him, especially when things never went his way on campus....

Burch pulls out the classic politically correct catch phrase when firing a coach.

"We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.”
(And don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.)

Uh, do I dare bring up the obvious available candidate that I'm sure Chuck has the number?

Oh, Jeff Meyer would definitely be on the short list.

OK, fill me in, objectively, would Meyer be a good hire or not....I don't know much about his relationship with LU outside of the W/L record, and that he is at Indiana at the present.....

Here is a link to an article from the Shelby Star with an interview with Burch....

He's currently at Michigan, not Indiana.

Meyer isn't at Indiana any more. He is "Administrative Specialist" at Michigan. SCAR would probably know for sure, but I don't think he is interested in either being a head coach again or moving back to this part of the country.

I believe Sly's original reference was to another former LU coach, who is most definately "available" (currently selling real estate and coaching his daughters AAU team). I'm guessing SJ was being sarcastic about Meyer

No, I was being completely serious about Meyer. He's an on-court assistant at Michigan now that one of their assistants has been away with family issues or something. He has been fully cleared by the NCAA of all of the things that happened at Indiana. It took a while for the NCAA to clear him so if I'm not mistaken that's why he didn't go into coaching immediately. If anyone thinks he has only been an administrator at Michigan then they're greatly mistaken. He's always been coaching there.

I never even thought of Coach Dunton as being the one who the AD would go after. I guess it depends on which side of that fall-out he was on. If he goes for one, he's definitely not going for the other.

I personally would like us to look at Dave Davis at Pfeiffer, awesome resume for sure at D-2...

It would be ironic too, since G-W hired Bobby Lutz from Pfeiffer for two weeks back in 1995, then he quit to go be an assistant at UNC-C, and we had to settle for Scruggs somehow.....

Another name that immediately popped into my head was Bart Lundy, after High Point gave him the ax last year, I think he is at Marquette now....Big South experience, may still want a head coaching gig....who knows?

Then again, G-W could always hire Mr. McKay for an easy one year fix.

There are not too many bigger Jeff Meyer fans than me, which is one reason why I wouldn't want him coaching for another BSC school. If I recall the last time SCAR talked about him here, Jeff was really enjoying being a major college assistant, so if he is doing that now at Michigan, I'd be surprised if he had any interest in a job like G-W. Also, all his family and I believe his wife's also are in Indiana.

Is RD a potential candidate? Would he even be interested in the job? At this point he should be able to get back in DI.

2. You get him for 2 years. Look on the bright side - It gives you more time to find a real coach.

Chuck Burch is my main man...I am going to announce on Flamefans that I am officially the lead candidate for the GW job...Of course I am kidding. It has been a few weeks since Jeff and I have talked but I would have to say that Chuck has him on the top of his list. Not sure if Jeff would take it though. He would be a good fit though. Yes he is an assistant now at Michigan and I believe Coach Dunn may not come back which means Jeff would stay in the position he is in. I will have to ask him...I am sure we will talk this week.

If Meyer does get the job I think he would probably hire Julius Nwoso who really wants to get into coaching. Juice has tons of international player connections. I was surprised that coach Layer didn't hire him but I understand. Coaches usually go with who they are most comfortable with and who they know the best. However Julius is like Michael Jordan to the Nigerian players. I have seen it 1st hand how Nigerian players treat him like a national hero. He has a lot of influence since he is the assistant coach on the Nigerian National team with John Lucas and is the head coach of the Jr Nationals. I would imagine Jason Allison and Steph Leary would also be on Meyer's short list of assistant coaches.

G-W - continuing the trend of LU Jr, one former LU employee at a time

They just need to go ahead and fire Patton and hire Karcher.

Why have we not hired him? Heck, why hasn't anybody hired him?

Be careful what you wish for ... some of these former LU coaches at GW are fairing pretty good against us. Payback is a powerful motivation.

Too bad that it can't be like the old days: Meyer could hire RD as an assistant again, Reeves could sign RD's daughter, and everybody would be happy!

What does Rick Reeves have to pay LU back for? Maybe because we didn't offer him the job as men's coach or the salary he wanted? He left us for more money.

I don't think Julius has actively sought a college coaching position yet other than at LU. I recall SCAR posting here that Layer was made aware of his availability when he was hiring his staff. Can't fault Dale too much for hiring guys he knew, but add my name to the list of those who would love to see Juice back at LU.
