The 6-foot-3 Devince Boykins is very versatile and extremely athletic. He was a football star his first couple of years of high school, but has turned his focus to basketball. However, some of the hits on the gridiron took a toll on Boykins’ body and resulted in some nagging injuries during basketball season, so he’s flown under the radar because of it.
Despite that, recruiting has begun to take form.
“(Recruiting) is going good,” he said. “I just got another offer from Liberty.”
According to Boykins, his offers stand at South Carolina, Liberty, Marquette, Miami, Johnson C. Smith and Winthrop, with Clemson showing interest.
It’s worth noting that Boykins’ father played at Johnson C. Smith, but the Golden Bulls just got in the mix in his recruiting in the last couple of months.
Boykins claims “no favorites” but does admit to one school at the top.
“My first offer was South Carolina,” he said. “It puts them more at the top of my list. It lets me know that they were looking at me early, and it shows that they want me more.”
Boykins is in no rush though to make his collegiate decision, as he plans to see what the season and summer bring.
“I plan on making a decision probably around this time next year,” he said. “I thought about making a decision early. But I think I’m just going to wait to see if anything else comes, and I’m going to weigh my options. I think it’ll be in the early signing period.”
Boykins admits that South Carolina hasn’t been in touch with him much recently, but he still likes the connection he has built with the coaching staff.
“Last time I talked to coach (Darrin) Horn, he was just checking on me asking me about working out and my family,” he said. “It’s not always basketball with (the coaching staff), especially with assistant coach (Cypheus) Bunton.”
Below is a note from Scout.com National Recruiting Analyst Dave Telep on Boykins after evaluating him over the summer:
“He’s a guy to keep an eye on. This will be his first full season without football. He’s yet to completely drop the hammer offensively, but his athleticism and passing ability are notable. He’s tracking as a good defensive player and fine help side shot blocker.”

From the way I read the article, it sounds like Layer is the one doing the following. Sounds like WU was already in the picture and LU just got added to it recently.

Well yeah, if I had remembered that Layer was at Marquette last year...I always seem to forget that he wasn't an LU assistant last season...oh well, just shows I'm getting old I guess.

that was some pathetic defense on a lot of those plays. poor rotations, pitiful helpside D (did they even try on the majority of those plays? if so it was an embarrassing attempt), not being in good defensive position on closeouts, just standing there watch the guy get as many tip ins as he wants - doesn't even look like anyone even attempted to box him out on every single offensive board or tip he got, just waltzed to the rim uncontested for several backdoor baskets

I agree with shuk. A player's youtube highlight video should feature textbook defense by the opponent. Showing your offensive prowess against anything less is misleading. You should also show missed shots and turnovers so as not to decieve people into thinking you are perfect.

and that's exactly why highlight tapes are useless to anyone but fans. put up points where there is actually some semblance of defense and then i'll be impressed. better yet, put in some highlights of lockdown defense and i'll be more impressed.

funny, people could say that about your hoops team, seeing as how nearly everyone from last year's freshman class bolted. no real coach takes highlight tapes seriously, they would rather see full game film to see what the player can do when someone actually plays defense on him.

Highlight tapes are like a great sale at a store. You know that the store isn't only the sale, but the sale makes you want to look into the store even more. Coaches know that highlight tapes aren't everything, but they are enough to make a coach interested which then leads to the coach looking into the kid even more.
To say no real coach takes highlight tapes seriously is pretty ignorant.

I've heard D1 basketball coaches who have won championships go on record saying they don't watch highlight tapes and some even said they throw them away. You honestly think you know more than championship basketball coaches?
highlight tapes are useless. the player on the end of the LU bench would look good on a high school highlight tape where there is zero defense being played.

Programs that are at the championship level are a completely different animal. They don't have to go through recruits and actively search for the best players - the best players come to them. If you judge Division I athletics by the top 20 programs then you're really a lot more out of touch with the reality of the sport than I even realized.

His dad starred for them years ago. I didn't bother to list the offer because if he were going there he would have verbally committed already.

So you don't count MAC conference championships as championships now? What are they then? Are big south championships not championships either? If a coach is relying on highlight tapes for recruiting rather than game film, high school games, and summer ball, they most likely aren't going to be winning many games. Highlight tapes don't even get the job done for championship caliber NAIA and D3 teams, much less at the D1 level.
