I went ahead and started this thread since, really, this is a very big game for us. The chickens have had some success so far, so a win would put us in good position heading into January and the full-blown conference season.

How do we beat Coastal?

REBOUND.

Joe Harris will destroy us on the boards if we don't put a body on him. I think we can match up with them everywhere else, but if let Joe get on the glass offensively, or dominate the defensive glass, we'll be in trouble. I would almost want to start Bill Weaver to D up on Joe, but I'm not sure if that would happen.

GET THEM IN FOUL TROUBLE

In Coastal's one reasonable loss (Cal State, Northridge) they lost by being forced in turnovers, and being in foul trouble at the guard positions. I think we can force them into this, as well. If we get Harris into foul trouble, that would be even better.

MAKE OUR SHOTS

Seems pretty simple, but after playing CSU, we need to be reminded that not everyone will shoot 26%. Joe and Greenwood are hitting 50% of their shots this season, and we will need to hit at a decent clip, as close to 50% as we can get. This is why Konan would be very helpful, since his shot selection is usually very good. It Jeremy gets into rhythm, then that's even better.

Just my three cents. Feel free to disagree.

Twisted ankle. Probably a game-time decision. All depends on the level of swelling/pain today. Doesn't look like anything too serious.

If Konan is not able to go, I think giving more minutes to Weaver and/or Burris to match up with Harris may be the best we can do.

Carter had 3 blocks last night, giving him 12 for the year. Our leading shot blocker last year with 13 was....................................................... Kyle Ohman.

I thought Carter's impact on the interior went well beyond his actual blocks last night. He altered at least a half dozen other shots. We haven't had that since Aluma.

Coastal Carolina 111, VMI 97

LEXINGTON -- Despite a game-high 31 points from Austin Kenon, the host Keydets (3-3, 0-1) fell to Coastal Carolina (6-2, 1-0) in the Big South opener for both teams.

Kenon was 11-of-19 from the floor and made 5 of 9 3-pointers for VMI, which was down 53-51 to the Chanticleers at halftime.

Michael Sparks added 18 points and Ron Burks totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds for VMI.

Danny Nieman scored a team-high 22 points for Coastal Carolina, which had three players score 20 or more.

His impact is relative to the rooster head mowhawk!

and this from vmi board re: last night's game:
CCU even more athletic this year with those newcomers, Gray and Greenwood. They broke our press like they were playing 5 on 3, and were credited with 82 points in the paint. Forced only 14 turnovers.
and
we got our butt kicked at our own game style......they out ran us out muscled us and just flat whipped us.

I watched the game on MASN last night and VMI is not as impressive as they have been in the past. I think Coastal is good but not as good as everyone thinks maybe it is just me but I think that we can hang around with both teams and hopefully get a couple of wins.

That used to be what we did to VMI. I don't think the fact that CCU was able to do that has much impact on their game against us.

Harris is the obvious focal point- everytime he's recorded a double-double this year- Coastal has won that game.. easier said than done as he's a super active guy on both sides of the court..

I really think CCU's success this year is going to fall more on folks like Chad Gray- he's a stud if you aren't familiar with him- his problem is he's inconsistently motivated/focused- athletically he's the best on that entire team- even more so than Harris... I have that on very good authority from a friend of mine that coached him at South Carolina before he transferred to CCU..

With 3 other players scoring in double figures for the year- you can't focus just on Harris- I think this is going to be a tough game as I think CCU is playing like the #1/#2 team in the Big South thus far- they certainly won't finish 8th IMHO.. Good luck Flames!!

Man I am sorry I am going to miss this game! I think we are going to have a decent crowd too. FamilyNet, JC TV and MASN are all showing the game too. I wonder if we have a red uniform to break out this season? We usually wear red vs Coastal. I hope the team continues to improve tonight and make history with a 2-0 start in conference.

I'm with you, Scar. One of my wife's friends has a surprise party for her husband returning home from Iraq. So I'll be missing a Flames game on TV in Houston as well as the Big XII Championship.

:banghead

I'll be depending on twitter to keep me up on both games tonight until I can find an excuse to get us home.

If you're worried about missing the football games tonight, we're updating them as much as possible from The Vines Center. Come out and watch the game and get updates from the football games.
