before today i said i would not be surprised if we ended the week at 2-2...

i still stick to this statement, but have become more skeptical today.. though i think this could spark some fire under the guys to play hard against ODU

No idea what to expect but I hope we play and shoot with confidence! I will be looking for:

1. Carter to get more minutes and for his offensive productivity to improve.
2. Jesse to look for his shot more.
3. Same for Perez.
4. overall improvement in our offensive flow.

Regardless of the score, if I see some of these things I will be happy.

I don't even know what ODU lost from last year but I say we lose by 25 and I cry myself to sleep. No actually, at this point, if anybody just shows me something, some kind of improvement, or maybe some kind of consistency, or offense, I won't even mind losing by 25.

You guys will basically see the same team you played last year. We only lost one guy from last year's squad and he was hurt in the BracketBuster game and only played about 5 minutes. Otherwise, our approach won't change much. We'll try to take advantage of our superior size and we'll play hard in a variety of defenses. We won't always be pretty, but we'll be effective.

By the way, we should have a decent crowd traveling (nowhere near what you guys had at our place), despite the middle of the week game. Even if the numbers are small, those of us who do travel tend to be loud.

If you guys want to chat some more, you can find us here: http://www.monarchnation.com/phpbb2/index.php

Well with that said, I wouldn't be surprised if we lost by a good 30 points. Last year the final score was 80-56 and that was with Judas and Smitty. If they have the same team and we play anywhere near how we played today, not looking forward to it. However, if we can get our guys to be on their game and actually make shots instead of being 1-for-9 and 28 turnovers, we might be able to keep it at a smaller deficit.

I'm not saying to expect a ton on Thursday, but remember that we didn't have Jesse for that game last year. Seth was forced to play point guard and we never had any rhythm at all. Granted, right now we don't have much either but I know this coaching staff will get these guys better than they were today.

And by that point Seth didn't care

ODU lost NOTHING from last year. Media pick to win the CAA. They're REALLY good.

despite today I still expect the game to be competitive, however ODU will win, by 10-15 points.

I wouldn't put ODU in the same class as Clemson but they are one of the best if not the best team in Virginia...Let's just say they are better at hoops then with the ole' pigskin... I say atleast 20 point spread by then end... It just matters if they let off towards the end of the game... GMU almost let us get back in to it when we were down big.... Clemson just layed a full court press on us till the very end... It just depends on how they end the game...

Im a LU fan first but ODU is my hometown team and they are very good so I think the Monarchs win by 15-20 and but only because their size and depth allow them to pull away...oh and I get a picture with Ted Alexander after the game...

ODU by 20+

Really looking for any kind of improvement. I don't mind the losses so much but I'd like to see something resemebling an offense. That would be nice.

Does anyone know what type of Offense Layer ran at Colorado State? I really doubt he ran a guard oriented offense. Layer is known for Post Play. Why not go back to playing a normal offense with a Power Forward and a center. We have Burrus who can play a strong power forward with Mcmasters as a Center. Im afraid he is running the same offense as Mckay, just because he doesn’t want there to be a huge learning curve from last year. This is obviously a Rebuilding year, so why not change the offense and let are young players learn a new system now. The other thing is Layers Recruiting strength is big men. A post oriented offense fits Layers Recruiting Style.

You coach to your strengths. Right now, our strength is our guard play.

I understand that, but also as a coach you have to have a long term vision for the program and if your a post oriented coach and thats what you know best, than you need to change it up. We do have the players that can run a post oriented offense. We have Mcmasters, Burrus, Baker, Vander Pol and Konan who are all able to fit into the center and the power forward position. That is 5 players who i believe can be great inside players for us in the future.

He has an offense that he is putting in and it is different than last year. However, that game yesterday showed you nothing about it. We were never able to get into an offense. They were pressing us the entire game which made our offense go into scramble mode. Unless ODU changes their game completely, we're not going to face that same type of press tomorrow night.

None of those guys are true inside players. Not one of them is comfortable with their back to the basket. CM and TB would rather be playing on the wing, Konan and Burrus have zero offensive game at this point and JVP can't get on the floor.

Layer is adapting his philosophy to match the players he has. We're not going to go from a 5-guard offense to a traditional one overnight. We don't have the players to match. Coach didn't exactly inherit a team that was setup for success.

Agree that he didn't inherit a lot AND by the time he got here he needed to recruit the best talent still available and those didn't happen to be the post players we will need in the future. Give him a couple of years to recruit guys for his system before we judge it too harshly.
