The Clemson game is at 10:00 am on a Tuesday. I have heard rumors that classes will be canceled for the game, but no one has said anything for sure. Is there any way that we can find out if class will be canceled for that game? I'm in all 400 level classes and can't afford to skip them, but this game is on ESPN and I really want to be there, plus it will be my first chance to see JVP and the guys in a live game.

Is there any way we can find out for sure what's going on? Is there any way we can petition to get classes canceled, even if it's just until noon?

I think it is absolutely imperative that we have a HUGE showing of support for this game; from the students, staff, and faculty. It is nationally televised...during which time, we will be the ONLY game on TV. The amount of exposure for the school would go a long way in making Liberty a household name. We know how to market ourselves to the evangelicals of the world....we need to make ourselves known to the general public to help erase some of the preconceived notions they have about us.

Carolina recently found out about this very thing. For years, they chose not to have a Thursday night football game on ESPN. That finally ended last week with the FSU/UNC game. It was a sellout & the administration was very surprised by the amount of support shown.

WVa. coach just mentioned yesterday how valuable it was that they were the only game on this Friday....how the university reaps benefits from the athletic program to the admissions & applications to the school with this type of exposure.

Bottom line, this will help us in marketing our university, which in turn could lead to a higher application count. That alone could give us a greater luxury in choosing high academic applicants. Which, would allow us to break the stereotype that "LU allows anyone in that can breathe". Athletics can improve academics & vice versa. Its cyclical.

Thursday and Friday night football, to me, is exactly what Monday night is to America. You are the game on Thursday night and on Friday night we are the game. You know how many young people get to lie around and watch WVU and USF this Friday night. It is colossal for our program. I would not want to do it every week, but it has been very advantageous.

We need to cancel classes for this game... if the administration truly supports the athletic department canceling classes will really show it, also maybe even offering free room checks or some kind of incentive to the students to go out and support basketball (for those who already plan on going we dont need an incentive but for those who dont)

The 10am start is a bummer. The prospective students (and their parents) that could be watching it will be either at school or work. Your best bet from a marketing standpoint will probably be the highlight that ESPN will show on Sportscenter. So you gotta keep the game close to make sure they show more than just a box score!

Then last year, after the Tar Heels beat Rutgers University on a Thursday night early in the season, the program got a bump in the rankings and free prime-time national publicity that could help win over potential recruits.

Suddenly, there was less opposition to the notion of a Thursday night matchup.

"This is an extraordinary opportunity to showcase our campus," Chancellor Holden Thorp said in recent e-mail to UNC-CH employees and students. "The topic of Thursday night football has vexed our campus for years.

"We have resisted scheduling a Thursday night game in Chapel Hill during classes, a stance that I support. This year, however, we proposed the idea of holding the game during fall break."

Classes are for sure, definitely cancelled. Times that are cancelled: 9:15, 10:50, and 12:25.

Not sure I necessarily agree...you go to college to get an education, not to go to basketball games. I won't pretend like I wouldn't be at the game, even if classes weren't canceled. However, I don't think the administration canceling classes have anything to do with it's support towards the athletic programs.

b) Work 2nd shift.

c) Are in college and don't have class from 10-12 and will be in their rooms watching tv.

I'm not saying they draw the same amount of viewers. I'm merely pointing out that the exposure that it generates has an effect.......either positively or negatively.

Its up to us to do the best we can in showing the viewers that our athletic programs have great support from the students, faculty, & staff.

yeah, there certainly will not be as many people around to watch it, but there will be a lot of people watching it. It is very important for students to get their butts there. I'll be there. LU cancels classes for stupid assessment testing and snow scares. I don't see why it would be a big deal to cancel 2 or 3 class times for 1 day. Even if this wasn't on ESPN, it's a pretty big freaking deal to open the season hosting Clemson.

of course i would be ecstatic if Radford was on ESPN, but I wouldn't be under the assumption that by playing at 10am on a Tuesday on ESPN against a middle of the pack ACC team would be some kind of momentous occasion that will change the face of the program. Im just saying you guys are making this bigger than it really is. you cant compare the exposure of 10am on tuesday to the exposure of primetime thursday or friday night.

and yes I realize what kind of audience is available for 10am weekday television viewing, I work in television, actually part of my job is to estimate television audiences for our sports properties.

I agree that people will be watching it. It will be the most watched Big South game of the regular season.

I just don't think that the 10am Tuesday ESPN game is going to lead to more applications and higher academic standards, as the original poster suggested.

It could create some buzz locally, which would give high school students in the area possibly a reason to stay home and go to Liberty. But high schoolers by and large are not going to be watching this game.

at first i was pro cancel classes, but the more i think about it, if this were to happen, some LU haters out there would continue to say LU is soft academically and that they care more about athletics than academics. i would think that many students would skip class to go just because its on ESPN, and it's an ACC team. i could care less if it is the last place team or a middle of the road team. that caliber team does not usually come to lynchburg. i would say keep classes going knowing that many students will skip class and go. maybe cider can answer this but could a prof not just cancel class on their own without university approval??

If I can add my two cents here really quick. I think that the admins cancelling classes on that day will be more of a hand out to the students than it would be to the athletics dept. Having a packed gym for the game is important to the team yes. But for many of the finicky LU fans on campus, many would not consider skipping class to go to one basketball game at ten in the morning. Do I hope that they cancel classes? Yes. Do I think it is important that they do? Yes. This would not only be a great supportive decision by the admins to the athletic dept. It would also be a huge encouragement for the students to go to the game.

IMO, Yes! it's not often that Liberty gets to be on ESPN, playing an ACC team at home.

Clemson is going to be pretty good this year to.
