Aaron Bowen, the first player to orally commit to MU's 2010-'11 recruiting class, has decided to re-open his recruiting.
Bowen's father, Tony, informed coach Buzz Williams of his son's decision in a phone call Thursday morning, according to Bruce Rosebrock, Bowen's coach at Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, Fla.
The primary reason for Bowen's change of heart, Rosebrock said, was the departure of Williams' former assistant, Dale Layer, who was hired as head coach at Liberty University on April 8.
Layer had been the point man in the 6-5 1/2, 180-pound guard's recruitment, which began last fall and ended with Bowen's commitment to MU last Nov. 20.
"It's not that the coaching staff did anything wrong; it's just that Coach Layer did everything right," Rosebrock said. "And when he wasn't there, it left a hole with Aaron. There was something missing. Coach Layer was special to Aaron, and they had built a relationship."
espn gives him a 92 but scout and rivals only gives him a 3/4 star? espn sure does tend to be way off with all the others...

While this article speaks very highly of Coach Layer and suggests that he will continue to bring in higher quality recruits in the future I see nothing in this article that suggests we have a legit shot at landing this particular player for 2010 or that he has any interest in our school (whatever his feeling for coach).
It will be nice when we get this quality of player on a regular basis. That time is coming quickly imo...

Would an official visit in the coming weeks be interest enough?
Incidentally, he is ranked by Rivals.com as the 126th best player in the entire Class of 2011.

That would sure be a really strong 3 man class, and I would have no problem if it meant someone on our current roster isn't renewed, although those things usually have a way of working themselves out. By the end of this season I think we'll have a couple of guys who will be faced with a decision of whether they can be content being a practice player here or they want to go somewhere else where they can play.

I think we'll have one or two, who dont fit into Dale's system to leave. Bowen is too good to pass up if he wants to come here.

I've tried to avoid posting on this kid since I first read that article because I didnt want to get excited over nothing. If layer can sign him up........you gotta make room somehow. Our roster this year has so many unknowns that will work themselves out very soon. I mean I dont think we know what to expect from anyone outside of Ohman, Baker, and Sanders. Everyone is either inexperienced, coming off major injury, or both.

If this is true, congratulations to Aaron, Coach Layer and staff.
