There's 2 types of penalties, I believe. Historical and contemporaneous. It says on there we're clear of historical (which is post-season ban) because of improvement but doesn't mention the loss of scholarships. Do we lose them again?

Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams that score below 925 on their four-year rate and have a student leave school academically ineligible can lose up to 10 percent of their scholarships through immediate penalties. Teams can also face historically based penalties for poor academic performance over time.

This is the fourth year of immediate penalties and the third for historically based penalties. Teams facing a third year of historically based penalties can be banned from postseason play, in addition to scholarship losses and restricted practice time resulting from a second year of long-term sanctions.

Next year, institutions could confront restricted Division I membership for the entire athletics department if a team has four consecutive years of poor academic performance.

The number of teams not meeting the benchmarks for historically based penalties (900 APR) and more immediate penalties (925 APR) fell dramatically over the last four years, with a remarkable drop occurring in the last year. Less than 10 percent of teams have APR scores below 925, and less than 4 percent have APR scores under 900.

On the penalty side of academic reform, 177 teams at 107 different colleges and universities will receive an immediate or historical sanction this year.

A total of 104 teams did not earn a 925 APR and had a student-athlete leave school ineligible, and they will incur immediate scholarship losses. Twenty-two teams will lose immediate scholarships and receive the first historically based penalty (public warning) as well for posting an APR below 900.

Another 18 teams under 900 APR will receive a public warning; 30 teams will receive playing and practice restrictions in the second stage of historical penalties; and three have been assessed a ban on postseason competition for the first time, the third stage of historical penalties (of those three postseason ban penalties, there is one pending appeal).

On a side note: What the heck is ATrain doing with our women's tennis team? Looks like we should be recruiting bags of hammers to bring up their score.

We wouldn't have this problem if we had a designated nerd on each team, like I suggested... We play seven players in our rotation. The team consists of 13+ players. If four of the extra six were on the roster because they're braniacs, then we'd be better off.

No penalty for basketball. All penalties for this year are listed here.

The APR measures graduation of athletes, not grades, so recruiting brainiacs is not required. If we can get the bags of hammers to walk, bring them on.

That says it's for 08-09. I'm not sure if that means the penalties are for 08-09 or if it's next years upcoming penalties as of 08-09

The only penalties in-conference were a small scholarship hit to wrestling at G-W and wrestling at VMI being put on public notice.

In the serious "ouch!" category, men's basketball at Centenary and football at UT-Chattanooga were hit with post-season bans due to repeated APR problems. Jacksonville State football has an appeal pending but could face the same thing.

One other thing: the max score possible on the APR scale is 1000. Liberty women's basketball posted a 991.

Carey Green's doing more than a few things right over there.

Either way, I blame McKay. Boo McKay. And Dunton too, because he's part of those 4 years.

Next year's APR will include 3 different coaching regimes. A 4 year score. I'm amazed we plan to be competitive next year.

Blame Dunton now, blame McKay later. As I read it, the problem started under Dunton but McKay got some of it turned around -- even though this year's APR was lower than last year's, enough progress was apparently made to keep the NCAA from handing out more penalties -- however, losing all those freshmen as transfers is probably going to dent the recovery effort down the line.

as much as I'd like to fully blame RMK it's just not the case. It's like us blaming Layer b/c he couldnt keep all the players after RMK left, it's something that's just not easy to do...like RTF said 2 years from now and we still have issues you blame RMK

good thing for centenary that making the ncaa tournament or any post season tournament is never on their radar.

Good one. I would not have thought of that. Come to think of it, I have NEVER heard them mentioned for winning anything, much less being in the NCAA tournament for any sport. Wonder why...

Do you guys even read threads before you post? RTF linked to a page that listed the schools being penalized and we weren't on there. Also, when was the last time WU had anybody leave other than these last 2? That'll do wonders for your APR. It's really a silly calculation that has a lot of power. But with your last 2 defections I think you can kiss the 90th percentile goodbye.
