What does our roster look like now?

After a whirlwind few weeks, we look something like this for the '09-'10 season (positions based upon roster)::

G
Jeremy Anderson
David Minaya
Kyle Ohman
Jesse Sanders
James Spencer
Bill Weaver
RECRUIT: Chris Perez, Bo Barnes

F
Tyler Baker
Austin Smith

C
Carter McMasters
RECRUIT: Joel VanderPol

That leaves us with two open scholarships. This is assuming that Ovie will not be here...which I think is pretty much all but official. Am I missing anyone?

You forgot Bo Barnes.

And it's impossible to say that any of the recruits, or current players, will be back. Just too early to say.

Yeah, I think we should worry about our coach before we worry about the players.

It's never too early to talk college basketball.

It's too early to know who plans on leaving or staying, since we don't know who the coach will be. Bill and Tyler and Carter could leave if they dont like the new coach. Chris Perez might back out if he doesn't like the new coach. The new coach could bring in a recruit or two of his own.

(All those are examples. I know nothing about any of those people leaving)

Carter's staying.

You can figure Tyler, Kyle, David, and Jeremy are staying because they all used their redshirt.

Jesse I think will stay. There's no 100% guarantee but I've just got a really good feeling about it.

I think Bill is the same way. I think he loves the school and is staying.

Austin's the one I worry about. He's been iffy for a while now. Hopefully things are starting to get better for him and he's convinced to stay.

Does Johnny have any shot of staying on?

Don't completely rule out Johnny or Brolin. Although I would consider both questionable at best.

I said this to HMO yesterday, and I'll say it again. I don't want Brolin back.

How does the "decommitting" work?

I remember last year we picked up both Weaver and Jesse because they "decommitted" from their respective schools (Brown & Rice, I believe). In other words, if a coach leaves, do student athletes no longer have to sit out the required one year if they also leave? That is to say, had Curry waited another week to leave, could he have been playing for Duke NEXT year, or does that only apply to incoming freshmen?

What I do know is that you have already started the school year, or played for a year or more, you are pretty much stuck (unless you want to sit a year or drop to a lower NCAA division). From my understanding, if you signed a LOI, the school and the player can agree to dissolve that agreement and the player won't be penalized (that is my understanding). Before the LOI is signed, a player can change their mind as many times as they like.

Again, that is my understanding, so someone correct it if it is wrong. (which it most likely is :( )

Let's not confuse signees and verbal commits. JVP is a signee and by all accounts coming to LU. The other three are all verbals and have nothing binding them from changing their mind. I would assume all are anxious to see the direction of whomever is hired.

Does JVP have the option to leave because of Ritchie?

LU would have to grant JVP his release, and then he could go wherever he wanted.

And while it is not unprecidented, it would be highly unusual NOT to grant a release when there is a coaching change. A recent example at LU would be Ehimen Orukpe. We released him and he signed with Wichita State.

(He still hasn't set foot on a basketball court in earnest on US soil, but that's another topic)
